This VHS is the RRRR-rated version that somehow slipped by censors with explicit graphic sex between Wiiliam Baldwin & Sharon Stone, both in their younger acting primes. I've heard both men & woman state they are grateful for this censorship oversight! In retrospect, audiences now know, that of the Baldwin brothers, William's the one who's best know for playing roles that are quite sexually risque & true to life. This is the role that made me take notice of him as a superb actor. "Sliver" is based upon the novel by Ira Levin (who also wrote "Rosemary's Baby"). Joe Esterhas' script has been semi-accused of baring a number of similarities to "Basic Instinct's" screenplay (that Stone played the lead in & became famous for). is it a coincidence that Sharon Stone plays the leading lady in both films? I doubt it. Carly Norris (Sharon Stone), is a book editor & divorcee who;s just moving into a sleek & posh New York City high-rise apartment building. She has no idea that she's rented the same apartment from which the former woman tenant fell to her death from the balcony. Norris is quick to throw a home-warming party to meet her new neighbors. Content with her stylish home, friendly & well-educated neighbors, Norris soon after becomes the center of attention for the building owner, Zeke Hawkins (William Baldwin). Although Norris has become friendly with an older gentleman neighbor, Gus Hale (Keene Curtis), who was a friend of the late former resident, he's hesitant to tell Norris about her death. When Norris finds that gifts have been left in her apartment by a secret admirer, she believes her relentless pursuer is Jack Lansford (Tom Berenger). Norris tries to brush him off as too weird. Actually, what's happened is that she's being systematically seduced by a secret suitor--Zeke (Baldwin). Norris isn't sure if either of them, or which one, is her expensive gift-giving secret admirer. That seems troubling to Jack (Berenger), which makes Norris more intent upon distancing herself from him. After Norris becomes more involved with Zeke their scenes become extra steamy & graphically sexual. Relentless Jack doesn't go away. Norris becomes suspicious of him after learning about the fate of her apartment's former tenant. But, Jack's suspicious of Zeke & expresses his serious concerns to Norris. Doing so forces her to cut Jack completely out of her life. This suspense deserves its R-rating due to the graphic sex scenes between Stone & Baldwin that are complete with nudity. They are by no means pornographic. Instead, they are erotic. Stone & Baldwin are so convincing as passionate lovers & the cinematography is so well done, that it's difficult to believe that they are acting. For that reason alone, "Sliver" is a superb suspense with a very unique plot that bares no resemblance to "Basic Instinct," at all. How that rumor got started is beyond my imagination because the 2 films are not similar. That's why I'd have a tough time deciding if one is better than the other~Read full review
