Kind of like the story of the three bears, I own a 700DX, which while very stable is too big for most uses outside the studio and I have a 340QF, which while small, light and compact can be a bit too light for many outside uses. The 400DX seems to be the perfect middle ground and while not compact when folded down is certainly quite portable and quite sturdy when in use. In other words, it's just right.

If you want or need a great tripod for the money, this one is great to use. It adjusts very well and stands strong and sturdy, yet very light in weight. Don't buy a cheaper one, because you will regret in the long run.
