I thoroughly enjoyed this game over the summer. It is highly addictive and the controls are very easy to master. The story line is limited, basically finding your family and getting revenge and it does get a little old chasing the same villains down over and over again to get anywhere in it. I think I linked the building of fleets, ransacking towns, and gaining promotions the best. Well, I guess I'll sum up the best and worst qualities in a list: Best: 1. attacking towns-somewhat reminds me of chess and is among my favorite things to do, I recommend conquering the Caribbean as a Dutchman. 2. controls-easy to master so you can jump right into the gameplay 3. choices-pick special skills, befriend Indians, Christians, pirates, governments or turn on them if you desire as well. 4. politics-sink ships carrying peace treaties to keep nations at war, send an Indian raid before attacking a town, etc. It's always fun to manipulate! Worst: 1. dancing-I didn't really like this part as it's a little boring. It's also hard to do with a laptop unless yours happens to have a number pad. 2. limited story-chasing relatives and "evil" villains all the time does get boring. While it's the main story, I recommend going through the entire thing only once. After that, go for wealth, fame, women, etc. Overall, it's a good game and I recommend it (pc is the best version too).Read full review
Sid Meier is a great developer and this game is no exception. You won't find a super deep strategy game with tons of micro-management here. It's essentially a collection of mini games that allows you to explore the life of a pirate in the 1600s. It's easy to jump into, and the learning curve is pretty small. It could easily be played by older players and younger players alike and has a very light hearted cartoonish appearence. The ocean battles are pretty neat with the blasts of cannons, and explosions blowing men and supplies overboard when a shot is a direct hit. You can cripple ships for capture or blow them out of the water. You can engage in sword duels with various characters that uses a paper, rock, scissors combat system to determine the winner. Sometimes you try to strategize the sword fight, sometimes you button mash. The scripted sequences are funny to watch and a good mix of variety is provided. All in all, this is a fun, light hearted casual game that can easily be beaten in a few evenings of casual play by gamers of almost any age. While not super technical, it still does give you the feeling of being a pirate in a sand box game that allows you to explore the seas and follow your own aspirations. Whether trading and shipping with a merchant fleet, hunting down pirates, fighting against rival nations, or just sinking every ship that crosses your path there is a little something for everyone in this timeless classic. Not deep like CIV 4, it is still a refreshing remake from a worthy game. "Aaaarrrrgh Mateys! I be giving this game a thumbs up!"Read full review
If you've ever played Uncharted Waters this is something like that. Not a whole lot but similar. However, there are several pros and cons: Pros: The graphics are great! Gotta have a good graphics card for full potential. The ship battles as well as the game play is good too. You get to make money, capture ships, and raid towns! Reminds me of my favorite old school PC game Uncharted Waters; except that this game is more modernized with better graphics. Cons: Too much bullshit that you have to do in order to 'survive/beat' this game. The dancing with governor's daughters is lame and wastes a ton of time, but you gotta do it to get info on tasks to complete. The fighting is good but only when you are at a young age. As you age you get slower and weaker which in turn makes you lose during fight battles. You've got to divide the plunder when the crew morale is low otherwise you'd face losing ships as well as crew members. Once divided you lose all your ships as well! Overall: This is a good game and I liked it for a short while. But I think Uncharted Waters still prevails. It gets repetitive in ways that take up too much time. Everyone has their own opinions so I say you should play the game to fully understand.Read full review
This is my first time playing a game like this one. I am addicted! I got it in late February 2006. It's been at least 20 yrs since I have been addicted to a game. In Sid Meier's Pirates, you get to sail a ship, visit ports, find treasures, woo several mayors' daughters, battle Indians, Spanish, English, Dutch, etc. You can choose to keep their ship or sink it! The only thing that bugs me is the wind always blows West. You have to calculate where you're going time-wise, and where you start to battle another ship. The wind can make it harder. In ports, you can buy food and goods for you and your crew, upgrade your ship with different items, and chat with locals. You can even re-name your ship if you like. Pay attention to everything everyone tells you in the story, it comes in handy sooner than you think! So much fun! You've gotta try it! Have fun! ~Phyllis in SCRead full review
This game is the remade version of an old commodore version. It's been remade with 3-d graphics, numerous new features and great mini games! The only real downsides are that the characters don't really talk, they just make noises like chuuuwaaa and other such things in place of actual words and that it gets a bit repetitive after a while, though that takes a while to happen. You can control a fleet of ships, get specialists in various skills, dance with the daughters of rich governors, beat down your enemies, meet famous pirates (like Blackbeard and Captain Kidd) and all sorts of other things!
