I bought one of these back in 1986. Mine has rosewood scales, otherwise it looks exactly the same as their newer ones. It is about as simple as a knife can be. I could live without the scalloping on the handle, or the jimping on the blade. They just don't do much to improve the grip. If you don't like the handle, it's nothing some filing and sandpaper can't fix. The steel is good. It sharpens easily, and the edge is nice and thin so you can make it very sharp. Mine has been used extensively for all manner of utility tasks both outdoors and indoors and has held up very well. I don;t try to use it in place of a hatchet or machete. It just isn't up to that task. You could baton with it in a pinch. But it is definitely not meant for that role. But for slicing, dicing, whittling, etc. It works just fine. Mine has the patina that thirty years will put on a carbon steel knife. I love it, but if you don't, there is always steel wool or Barkeepers' friend! The sheath is flimsy leather, but retains the knife well. Read full review
