I found this film to be scary but not in the way we have been scared by movies lately. Lately it is all about bloody, gory mastermind slashers but back in the day of creature features it was what was lurking around the corner that made you scared. That is what She Creature does, it is a dark - as in lighting - movie but when they show the creature you get a very good look at her. This film is a throwback to the creature feature era, this film has a mermaid (not unlike The Little Mermaid but deadlier) in a tank and the man who tries to make his fortune by exploiting her in freak shows. The acting is great - Rufus Sewell has to be the sexiest man on the planet! - the special effects are fantastic, especially when you get to really see the mermaid. A nice and dark film to add to your creature feature collection!Read full review
This is a rung or two above your better sci-fi B-movies and had the potential, with a better scipt and larger budget, to have been a very good science fiction creature flick. While the acting, in some scenes, is somewhat sub-standard, for the most part it is interesting and remains so mainly due to Carla Gugino's portrayal of her character Lilly. In fact, her performance raised the overall rating She Creature 1-star on it's own merit. It does suffer, however, from the lack of available funding, which is apparent from the beginning, such as in the opening scene. The digitally generated ocean waves on the rocky shoreline with a digital looking picture of an old mansion in the background is unmistakable. The film is almost entirely set on an old wooden sailing ship and while the set could have been worse it also could have been better. Also the computer generated creature at the end of the film is a little on the cheesey side. They should have stuck with Hannah Sim (below) with a good creature make-up artist. It does contain some nudity so perhaps not good for the kids, which is almost if not all, entirely of Hannah Sim as the Queen of the Lair and principal mermaid/monster. She had a bit part in "I Am Legend", incidentally. I don't remember any real language issues but it does have the standard creature/sci-fi violence. All-in-all it is worth the viewing and owning for an occasional later play. It's entertaining enough. Again, the cast is good, the script is a little weak, the acting better than the script, suffers mainly from a low budget, but still worth it.Read full review
I love this movie for it's Gothic 1800's visuals and true to folklore tales of a captured mermaid and her captures. The mermaid is beautiful and expressive and hungry for *spoil* This is the story I remember from my childhood. Not your Splash or Ariel stories but I think women will love this movie more then men for *spoil* reason. I must have watched it five times and I will be buying more for gifts for my friends! Although it is not gory it may not be for children under 16 for it's sexual content. Women are not exploited in this movie.
This is my first review so it may be rather amauter. Since it's a review on a movie I will talk about the movie. This movie is flat out amazing and wonderful it is one of my favorite movies of alllllll time. Thus the reason I bought it, because it's a favorite, I absolutely couldn't continue living without owning it. The dvd I received was in excellent condition, it looked brand new except there were marks indicating a sticker had been peeled off, that doesn't bother me in the least. When I received this movie I was so excited to watch it even though I've already seen it. Through out the entire movie I was sitting at the edge of my seat to get my face as close to the screen as possible and my sister, who was watching with me, kept laughing at me because of the continual smile of sheer pleasure on my face. True story. This movie takes place in the past and the colors and tones through out the entire movie really set the mood and add to the eerie, antique feel. It was done perfectly. I absolutely love the acting. All of the actors play their characters to precise perfection. Sometimes I wonder why this movie wasn't a bigger hit. The Mermaid: She is the star of this movie. I don't care what anyone else thinks (but there is some automatic bias because I'm obsessed with mermaids which is how I saw this movie in the first place). But really, I can't even express the satisfaction I feel with every scene she is in. They chose the perfect actress for the role; you see her and you see a real mermaid, not an actor in a costume. She does everything as if she had already been a mermaid in a past life. Her hair and makeup are perfect. I don't know how they did it, but she has no jewelry, no sea shells, no hair decorations, nothing but herself and her tail, and yet STILL she does not look human! She is a real mermaid. I have no idea how they did it, but they nailed it. As for her tail and other things in the movie that I will not give away for those who have not seen it, the special effects are wonderful and so out of the ordinary. She has a normal fish tail, but as it gets toward the fin it splits off into two tails, and then a fin at each end. The first time I saw this movie I was a young teenager, and didn't really like the tail because I expected it to be more traditional. But it has definitely grown on me and I very much so like it now. When I watched it recently, after buying it here on ebay, I was thinking of why they decided to split the tail at the end, and I wondered if they took some influence or inspiration from the Melusine, who has two fish tails instead of one (you may recognise the one from the Starbucks logo) I have no way of knowing if they did or not, but if so I find it very clever and thoughtful. They also gave her fishlike teeth that look very unhuman but at the same time don't take anything away from her beauty. I loved that also. I could talk about the mermaid aspect of the movie...forever...so I'm going to try and call it quits before I get carried away. All in all, I absolutely adore this movie, and my sister is NOT obsessed with mermaids and even she loves it! I probably didn't talk about any professional points of the movie that I was supposed to, but at least you got a good idea of how perfect the mermaid is =). Dislikes: I can only think of 2: First, I would have liked more scenes showing the whole mermaid. 2nd theres a short scene of 10 mermaids, I wish that scene was longer.Read full review
Have been looking for a copy of this dvd for my daughter for some time now. Thankfully I found it on ebay --- very good condition, reasonable price, quick delivery. Daughter was so surprised. "Where did you find it? I've been looking all over for it!" Well, my dear, next time try ebay.
