Soem kids pick this book up because they are interested to understand the strange things their grandparents say, and other kids are sent to use it by me when I'm teaching writing. Here's why: one of the goals in teaching writing is to help kids avoid use of cliches in order to create more authentic and well-done pieces of writing. English buffs like me love the origins of sayings. It's a nice reference book to have on hand, but it definitely not necessary for a classroom library. Add it when you have all the other books you need first.
I purchased this book as a resource for writing and improved understanding of the English language. It is well organized, A to Z, under topics and very informative. There are more than 600 phrases, sayings and expressions. The introduction includes; what is an idiom, where do idioms come from and what is a cliche. I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys words and language.
This book is a great reference for idioms. I was taking a class where I had to be up on my knowledge of idioms and this did the trick. It also gives you a bit of history as to where the idioms originated. I also use this in my classroom where the students can have several examples of how these are used in the english language.
It’s a great book !
