My mother is a huge fan of the 70's era Saturday Night Live shows. For her birthday I decided to get her this set. I looked at Borders first and decided that for a collection that has been out for a year, a retail price of 70.00 was a little steep. Don't get me wrong, it's not that my mom isn't worth it, it's that I like to get the most out of my money. So I came to eBay and looked. There is a nice selection of used and new editions of this set here at a nice variety of prices. I thought I got a very good deal at around 35.00. The set itself comes in a great box and includes a book with cast photos from the first season. The pictures in the book are really wonderful, and my mom and I both really enjoyed them. It's an 8 DVD set with each episode on its own disc. I didn't get a chance to watch any of the episodes yet, but I'm hoping to. Mom has watched them and she loved it. It's an excellent collection for old school SNL fans, and fans of classic 70's music. I know that next year I will be buying Mom Season 2.Read full review
This is the show everybody talks about. This is the cast everyone talks about. These are the characters everyone talks about. Was everything good? No. Was everything funny? Certainly not. But that's ok. With this first season, you get to see the evolution of the show that is still running today. You'll see everything from the hilarious (Word Association), the classic (samurai), to the misfires (Muppets talking about marital aides). Lorne Michaels tinkiers with the formula until something clicks. Early shows feature multiple musical guests. The second show is pretty much all music with a few commercial parodies thrown in. For all the warts that the show has, it still holds up pretty well. Even if some of the material is a bit dated (Squeaky Fromme and 10 cent stamps). If that's not enough, there's even an episode that was pulled from syndication by Lorne Michaels (Louise Lasser hosting). I remember this one from when the "Best of" program would run on various UHF stations in the early 80's. But I have not seen it since. This is a no brainer to pick up if you love watching the show or are a fan of the original cast. Keep these season sets coming!!Read full review
I remember seeing these shows live, the first time they aired. It was amazing, ground breaking and funny. Today some of the bits are dated, but it's also amazing what they got away with making fun of politics, social conventions, and especially mocking "normal" TV. The commercial spoofs are classic!

I bought it because some of my co-workers and myself were talking about who we thought the best comedians were. We all came to the conclusion that the cast of Saturday night live couldn't be beat. When I found out they had a collection of the first year I bought it on ebay because I knew I could get the most reasonable cost there. It's a great deal of entertainment at a low price - 8 DVDs in the set. It's nostalgic to me and makes me think back to my teenage years. It's very interesting, in hindsight, to see all the skits regarding issues of that time era and how they compare to the issues we are facing now. I cannot think of one thing dissatisfying about this purchase.
The beginning of Saturday Night Live, may not have been the slickest production, but it was exceptionally funny and creative. Excellent, memorable skits and artists make this 8 DVD set still a wacky joy to watch, these many years later. Belushi, Curtin, Radner, Aykroyd and more actors on SNL (produced by Lorne Michaels) are hosted by excellent guest artists. The Not Ready for Prime Time players had creative hilarity to spare. SNL continues, but its early years, diamonds in the rough, already had plenty of sparkle. I miss them all.
