As a production sound mixer for 3 years, the Sanken Cos 11d has been in my arsenal every step of the way. With its crisp mid's and its nice boost to maintain very clean sound while hidden under clothes, the Sanken Cos 11D is my choice of lav for production. The wire itself comes in four different colors: Black Beige White Gray There are a numerous accessories for this item that make the Sanken Cos 11D even more desirable. I use the Dve store brand vampire clip. Sanken produced a RM 11 rubber mount for the moc which is excellent, there's tie clips and so much more. The wire itself comes with a pigtail but as I've done five times now, I get mine connected to the desired wire by using wilcoxsound. Awesome company that can be found through ebay. Tiu.can buy and have them wire it for you for an excellent price. The cons about this wire are not much but still should be brought up. The highs are not veey strong. It seems as though there's not much headroom before the mic overmodulates. The self noise is pretty crappy. Using this wire while micing your actors will result in beautiful sound, but yiur going to be fighting a little with wire noise. That goes for most lavs in gerneral, but it appears as though the Sanken has always fought with me a little more. Overall, this mic is beautiful. It cuts well with a Schoeps and pretty close to many other condenser mics. It's a little pricey, so if you're starting off I would go with another mic for now. But with a price tag of around $320, this wil stay in my bag for many more years to come.Read full review
This is an amazing mic, I have the one with the 1/8th inch jack. Yes you can record it to a H1 Zoom! The zoom on the H1 and H4N both have plug in power which powers the COS-11D. As for sound quality, it sounds amazing. And for the price it better, there is a little noise from the mic itself...but recording I found most of that noise was ambient noise. It's an omnidirectional mic and its pretty sensitive. However it picks up your voice amazingly and the ambient noise isn't overpowering at all. It will pick up the sound of the environment. (I was outside and by a noisy road, any mic is going to pic that up. But it was absolutely usable, but for perfect all-noise free sound you need a Mixer or studio environment or both.) I didn't have a studio environment to test this mic, I've tested it outside, I've tested it in my car, and it will work great with on location sound. However without a mixer with low cut filters, and power to turn a weak mic signal into a "standard line signal" (All mics produce weak signals until powered up through a pre-amp or pre-amp in a mixer)you're just going to have to enjoy really good sound and not perfect sound. And by not perfect sound I mean...perfect comes with a bit more gear filter unwanted sound, and amp up the signal to noise ratio in favor of signal. Recording is great because you can turn your head side to side and speak and it sounds the same. This is one of the best sounding lavalier mics in the industry. I bought this as an indie filmmaker, chanced that it would work with the H1 & H4 Zoom recorders, and it does beautifully with both. If you have a quite room you will have a quite mic that will only pick up your voice. You can use it outside, and on location and it will pick up a bit of your surroundings, but you voice still comes in clear as a whistle. Next in line is a Sound Devices mixer, because you get better control and sound when you can run your sound through a pre-amp. Yes yes, I'm big on mixers/preamps because I'm learning as I go along here. If your in the same boat, This mic comes in a variety of connectors, if you want to just the H1 you need the 1/8(3.5mm) connecter which is the connecter you use with Sennheiser wireless G3 systems. At the time I bought it, wired with the 1/8 connector cost $379 and the XLR connector costs $100 bucks more. You can convert the 1/8th to XLR with: Sennheiser MZA 900 P - In-Line Preamplifier and Power Supply for EW Series Microphones (At B & H, for about $132 bucks) I liked this because I wanted to see the boost I'd get from an in-line pre-amplifier plunged directly into the H4N Zoom recorder via this 1/8(3.5mm) to XLR connector. (Be buying this soon) I asked the tech guys at B & H, and they said yes you can use this converter/preamp and use phantom power supplied on the H4N Zoom. Which I would assume would be more power than plug-in-power required by this mic. The actual increase in quality of sound this combo would pro-duce has yet to be experienced, but others have reported using this combo with the COS-11D to great effect...and love the ability of going wireless or wired when they need too. Also, you could plug it in the XLR input on a mixer. So this is a great investment if you're a film maker. And I'm already planning on getting a few more.Read full review
