The Samsung SGH-T959, one of 4 "Galaxy S" phones released by Samsung in late 2010, is an amazing device that nearly perfects what a user can expect from a high-end Android Smartphone. Ir's AMOLED display is amazing. It's bright in all light, has crisp and clear color, and is rugged and resistant to scratching. I've never seen a display look so good on a mobile platform unless it was a laptop with a WSXGA+ screen - something you'd pay over $1000 for. The controls, feel, and design are practical and comfortable. One-handed use in portrait or landscape is doable, but a slight stretch for the average sized hand. This is a slight drawback on occasion, but all considered the grip is worth it for such an expansive screen to work with. The touch sensitivity and accuracy is excellent. Even users new to a touch-based device have found it easy to work with. Both my parents, over 55 years old, were sinking baskets in Paper Toss or beating me at Air Hockey in no time - it's really that simple. The phone is fast, and apps don't hang or clip. Force Closes on Android 2.1 (an application crash, for those Droid non-speakers) are minimal and qiuck to resolve. For contrast, I previously owned the MyTouch 3G device - much slower, not nearly as trim in memory use, and running Android 1.6 with noticeable age. I've used the higher-end selection of phones from Blackberry, Motorola, Nokia, and others - nearly every single smartphone platform from Windows Mobile 5 to Symbian has crossed my hand - and I've never been more satisfied with a phone than the Samsung Vibrant for T-mobile. The downsides, and there are a scant few, are not dealbreakers, but detract from being able to call this phone "perfect". - There's no self-facing camera. As video conferencing and calls emerge as a more common platform, the Vibrant will lag behind newer and current devices that included this technology. - The phone ships with Android 2.1, not 2.2 like the Nexus One or Droid 2, and the benefits of the more updated OS are significant if you're a Google enthusiast. - Battery life is not stellar, and you'll find yourself charging the phone a lot. With a huge screen, a 1Ghz Snapdragon processor, and so much more packed into a phone with a 1500Mah battery, this can be expected. But because the phone is just so darn fun and useful, you use it a lot. And unfortunately, that means it's going to drain your battery in short order. If you just have to have the latest OS, a self-facing camera, or a phone that lasts for 3 days on one battery, you won't find it on or inside the Vibrant. But if you don't, and you're looking for a smart phone that piles it on without demanding an entire paycheck for it, you simply cannot go wrong with the Galaxy S Vibrant from T-mobile and Samsung. Update: Samsung & T-mobile now provide an official 2.2 "Froyo" release. See T-mobile support or the Samsung Galaxy S web site to download software. This update was....about 6 months late, and never went out over the air (OTA) but must be done using your PC and a USB connection. Additionally, I found that after I rooted my Vibrant and applied a quality non-stock ROM, the phone zipped along noticeably faster and battery life also improved. I continue to see local traders and online buyers sell G2's and MyTouch 4G devices to get the T959 or it's 4G successor, the T959V. That's a testament to it's solid quality.Read full review
Before buying the Vibrant, I'd read probably around 100 reviews and knew the specs, as well as the pros and cons of this particular model. Good Things to know: 16 GB of on-board memory = lots of room for apps, music, and video Microsdhc slot = You can add another 32 GB! OLED Screen = The best display you can get on any device. Wifi/GPS/Bluetooth 3 = common now, but nice to have. Bluetooth will allow you to listen to music via bluetooth, as well as the usual phone options. Caveats with this model: Everything will work fine on T-Mobile stock ROMs. Custom ROMs have issues with the GPS. Usually if your phone sleeps, you'll have to reboot for the GPS to work when using a custom ROM. The latest ICS and MIUI seem to work better - I'm using 360 Productions Lithium MIUI ROM with the kernel that came with it, and I haven't had to reboot yet. It's must faster, gets incredible battery life (compared to stock), and I'm pleased to the point where I'll keep with as my ROM. ICS is nice, but it's slow and uses up the battery. Final Point: Speed = You can get upwards of 4G speeds, but it's not a 4G phone. Your speeds for data will be great. 4G itself is a moniker for their high speed network. All this being said, I can stream Netflix and use Groove IP just fine with this phone. And did I mention it's paid for? This phone is as good as any new one for most features.Read full review
Very responsive however there is the occasional split second lag. Love the way I can customize the phone with widgets and apps and the live wallpapers truly look great on the Super Amoled screen. Battery life is not bad tho not great, averaging about 10 hours continuous music play before recharge. One thing that bothers me is the lack of a notification light up when new messages arrive or a miss call but that could be easily solved using app but that only lights up screen with sound and vibrate. I wished that samsung would've implemented this feature and have the capacitive buttons light up. Bluetooth doesn't work reliably for tethering, tho I can't say if the problem lies in the fact that the phone utilizes BT 3.0 and my BT dongle is only 2.0. Theoretically that shouldnt be a problem but imo, the BT implementation is lacking. No led flash is also one feature that should have been in place as well to compliment the excellent camera. A pity.....Read full review
THIS phone is awesome!! The screen is large, lighting is great on it and the display is great. It is easy to navigate and the touch screen is great and simple to use. Swype is used for texting and it works great. there are many many applications on this phone. You can download other apps from the market which is a great feature. It is thin and I love it. I would definitely recommend this to a friend.
Previously owned a HTC HD2, bought it when it was top notch. I modded it to android like most of the HD2 owners. But, too much bugs. This is my personal comparison between US Galaxy S vs HTC HD2. Why i bought this? Stable Android, cheaper than the EU Galaxy S. What i like about it? Better battery life (running 2days), Better quality screen. What i don`t like about it? Slippery compared to HD2. No flash. Build quality feels much cheaper. Smaller screen. Charge port position is retarded. What is very disapointing about this US Galaxy S is that Kyes only has Android 2.2 for it, compared to the EU Galaxy S which has Android 2.3 P.S. HTC Android/WinMO owners beware: even if the SmartDial agenda looks similar, this one is very retarded. It does not suggest you what to dial also based on the history of your calls. Simple example: I wanna phone "Mom". Well if HTC HD2 would suggest me to phone "Mom" mobile, this Samsung dialler suggests me to phone Mom home since it is first in my agenda. Also you can`t sms a person, you can only call him from that "smartdial" menu. Still, million times better than the Apple agenda which is purely retarded. Only reason why i picked this is because it is a stable Android out of the box. I own smartphones for 7 years now and i am sick of firmware modding and tweaking.Read full review
