SSD's seem to be the way everybody wants to go these days or at least that is what they would like you to believe. I fell for the hype and bought half-a-dozen or so of them from various reputable manufacturers and/or vendors. I wanted everything faster and less power hungry and cooler running just like they tell you. Big mistake. What nobody tells you is that your odds of a successful direct swap are really limited by the ability to clone your operating system to the new replacement drive and have everything go smoothly doing so and after. Either there is no accompanying software to do so or they refer you to something online that is supposed to do the job. Or you hunt all over the web trying to find something to download that will do the copy for you. I even bought a special dock that holds 2 drives and is supposed to do a direct clone/copy for you. The problem is that the cloned SSD nine times out of ten will not boot when you put it back in the laptop. And don't even think of trying to upgrade an older piece of equipment as I did. In closing, remember doing this so-called upgrade is not a panacea. Instead it is a real challenge to your ingenuity and patience. After you get one to work the startup is a bit faster if you are starting from scratch rather than from a slumber or standby. Power consumption is probably less and I never had a HDD overheat so I do not know about that. Would I go through all the hassle again? Probably not. And another big surprise is how all of a sudden your computer locks right up and refuses to shut down normally. Like 1985 all over again.Read full review
