with his first feature film, director colin trevorrow has crafted a quirky, independent dramedy that examines deep human issues while avoiding solemnity. the story written by derek connolly is a simple one. seattle magazine reporter jeff schwenson (jake johnson) discovers a classified advertisement placed by someone claiming to seek a partner for a time travel adventure. the bizarre nature of the ad, including the disclaimer, "safety not guaranteed" convinces jeff that it could lead to a story. overall this is a great movie. this is something different to watch but worth getting to watch.
I know that my review ruins the ending. How could it not? The film is original, engaging with likable folk you will root for, and with what I suggest is impeccable acting following perfect casting all woven around and about an extraordinary, if not flawless, plot. It is light-hearted or easy on the eyes and all your senses. Do not miss the Special Features. This movie is already an all-time favorite of mine not simply because it is a fantasy with a happy ending but primarily and precisely, I think, for that reason. That is to say that if the ending was not fantastic, the film would be heart or gut-wrenching . . . a disappointment I fear. This is the coming out party of Aubrey Plaza and a work for all involved to be forever proud of.

This movie is set in the Pacific Northwest. An intermittent running narrative supplied by Aubrey Plaza (the girl around whom the story is told) ties the tale together. She and two associates work for a magazine. While brainstorming for the next issue, a lackadaisical senior reporter notices an advertisement placed in a local paper for a companion with whom to time travel. The line "safety not guaranteed" piques his interest and, with 2 junior associates, convinces his female boss to let him pursue this story of interest, if nothing more than to escape the office. The rest of the movie is set pursuing the story. They attempt to interact with the kook who placed the ad, but discover it isn't as easy as they first anticipated. The lackadaisical reporter has an ulterior motive for pursuing the story, which has nothing to do with their assignment. The movie's humor is understated, which makes it very entertaining. But, as I said, it leans toward a cult genre, so you will either love it or shrug your shoulders. I loved it. If you have a sense of humor, I'm betting you will, too. The ending will surprise you. ....when it first came out and loved it. Now on blu ray it is better than ever and one of the best transfers I have ever seen. Love the Duplass brothers stuff. Safety not Guaranteed one of their best.
