If you have read most of Crichton's fiction you know how good of a writer he is. Crichton's autobiography documents his life, though not as explicitly as one would hope in certain areas. The book is strongly based on his travels to foreign regions. After reading this book I came to realize that Crichton is more colorful than any of the characters he portrays in his books. It is no wonder after he elucidates on himself why he writes so well. The man has experienced more than anyone I can recall. This is a good biography but if you want one that is utterly entertaining and informative I reccommend Isaac Asimov's "In memory yet green," and "In joy still felt."
Best book he has written (in my opinion & one of the best books I have read) and explains as a backdrop how he writes and the compelling nature and passionate style of his stories.

I bought this book (8th copy) because once again I loaned it to someone who didn't return. It is a wonderful exploration of a writer discovering his inner self.... through world travels then inner travels. Not the usual Michael Crichton story - just a journal in Michael Crichton style. I read it over and over.

Michael Crichton's Travels is less than a biography, but more like a series of anecdotes about his life and how it gave him a wealth of experience that he tried to put into his writing. From his days as a med student (he went on to write the show ER) to scuba diving (Sphere). Also included are accounts of his career as a director, working with Sean Connery (Great Train Robbery). A fascinating read, it feels like a series of stories he might have ready to share over a cold beer.
