If I told you I only like six tracks on this collection you may think I dislike it, but to me they stand out from the dated others by a mile! "Gold","True","Only when you leave","Round and Round","I'll fly for you" and "Through the barracades" are the ones. Classic pop music by the fab five, always dressed as if they were appearing in court straight after Top of the Pops but for a while everything they touched turned to Gold. Track listing 1. Gold 2. True 3. Only When You Leave 4. Lifeline 5. Communication 6. Instinction 7. Chant No 1 (I Don't Need This Pressure On) 8. To Cut A Long Story Short 9. Freeze 10. Musclebound 11. Paint Me Down 12. She Loved Like Diamond 13. Round And Round 14. Highly Strung 15. Fight For Ourselves 16. I'll Fly For You 17. Through The Barricades
Please note that I write as a Musicologist (a musician trained in the analysis of music). Spandau Ballet had the great fortune of having Tony Hadley as their vocalist - a singer who can articulate chromatic irregularities with the same certainty of pitch as Flora Purim. Suffice to say, he is backed by instrumentalists of similar virtuosity. The music of Spandau Ballet depends upon a superlative interaction between all elements of the band, and they slide through changes that hint at unrelated keys with utter expertise. The band fuses pop elements with the machinery of jazz and blues with a facility that makes bands as hallowed as the Beatles sound like amateurs. Ostinati reminiscent of J S Bach are fused with with a flowing harmonic contrapuntalism within a tonal framework that fails to bore. There are no 'guitar chords' here - only music that stands on its own as music, and is thus free of cliches designed to appeal to an audience made partisan by contrived fashion.Read full review
I bought this CD because i absoloutely loved Spandau Ballet when i was a teenager. When i found the singles collection on e-bay i had to have it! It is still as wonderful as ever, you get lost in the songs - especially if playing them through headphones. I am transported back to my teenage years every time i listen to it!
I actually purchased the Singles Collection, Not the Gold Collection, which may be pictured with this review. The CD basically contains the first fifteen singles, though omits "Glow", which was on a double A-Side single with "Musclebound". My only complaint is that the tracks are not listed in release date order. They've been well and truly shuffled. The Gold Collection is actually a bit better, as it contains two further tracks, including the brilliant "Through The Barricades". Again though, the tracks on this CD are also not listed in release date order.
