My brand new Sony Cyber-Shot was a great value purchase for about $100 (in late 2009). If you get a new one for less than that, I'd say it's a great bargain. The picture quality is excellent overall, and there are great features--like smile technology/focus on faces, autofocus, color options, etc. On the down side: the menu was hard to navigate at first, sometimes it takes blurry pics when you zoom in at the 5 megapixel setting, seems like the autofocus gets confused. And yes, the camera only takes MS Pro Duo memory cards, so my SD cards are no good. But I was able to buy the cards with no problem, and I use this camera for work and personal use, taking photos at events, putting them online and in print publications. I recommend it!
The particular camera I received has a couple issues---at times it doesn't turn on correctly (even with a fully charged battery) and there is a small cirular ghost image on the display----but thankfully, it doesn't affect the photos. The seller didn't disclose these issues---and I had already left a positive review by the time I noticed them (intermittent problems that I'm sure the seller was aware of). Anyway, the camera itself is another fine Sony digital. I've used a lot of different digital cameras at work, taking literally thousands of photos. In my opinion, Sony makes the best consumer digital cameras in the under $400.00 price range (150.00-300.00 is usually where we budget.). I don't like the fact that Sonys mostly use proprietary photo cards and I especially hate the fact that Sony changes their own memory formats----so that if you already have a lot of photo sticks from Sony, they don't necessarily work in newer Sony cameras. In my mind, that is simply a way to force their customers to buy more memory sticks as they buy newer cameras. That said, they make a terrific product. The DSC-W180 takes sharp, clear photos and is very easy to use. It's intuitive controls mean that even with very little experience, you'll be taking beautiful pictures immediately. I'm a guy who loves viewfinders, so I find it disappointing that there is no viewfinder on this camera (or on other newer Sonys). But in exchange, you get a small, thin size that fits in a shirt pocket with plenty of room to spare. I'm getting used to using the display as my viewfinder and my photos are not suffering. It's hard to miss the shot with this camera. As on other digitals, indoor flash photos take a few moments to que up, so you might miss shots of active pets or children while waiting for the flash to sense light---but this is something that affects all but the very pricey digital cameras. They're still nowhere near a 35MM camera for getting lightning fast shots. Also, this model has a Sony lens, rather than the Carl Zeiss lens used on other aim-and-shoot Sonys. If given the choice, I'd take the Zeiss lens every time. If you can find a good used Sony with a Carl Zeiss lens for a hundred bucks or a new one for under $300.00, that's the way to go. If you don't need high megapixels (most people do just fine without such high resolution) and if you can live with a larger camera body, older Sonys with the Zeiss lens are the best kept secret in consumer photography. Dealers will tell you that the newer generation Sony lens is a superior product---"Just as good or better than our old Zeiss lenses." They are lying to you, plain and simple. However, even with the Sony lens, this camera is more than adequate---I only bring up the other models as a comparison and if you like the size and features of this camera, I do recommend it.Read full review
good for price, The Camera is great for the price. It takes wonderful pictures and video's. The other reviews are false that say the picture quality is bad. The picture quality is very good, I love this camera. Three things you look for in a camera: Great pictures, Portability, and Easy to use. This camera has all three!! My girlfriend has been wanting this camera for a very long time, I am not an expert in digital cameras and cannot compare this camera to other brands, but for my personal use it is fantastic, I love it. It is easy to use and the picture quality is very good. Of course, as usual, Amazon delivered the camera in excellent condition. Highly recommended.
I love this little camera. I took many test pictures using the different settings and was very pleased with the results. I took pictures of the kids during Christmas and was happy with the quality and color. I used it to take a video of the New Year's fireworks show and was pleased with the quality. My only problem was trying to do the playback on the camera, was unable to which was a bit disappointing as you can view the pictures with no problem. Taking pictures of the fireworks though was not very good as the camera seems to have this "purple streaking" that appears when you take pictures with direct light facing it. The cameras that the kids were using, Polaroid 5.0 megapixel, took those pictures better. I bought the camera because it was priced very nicely and the reviews were favorable. I have always wanted a digital camera, I still have my Kodak film camera that still works very well but is more complicated to put pictures onto the computer. This camera is a good starter digital camera even though the external memory card was almost as much as the camera itself. I did figure out how to get more pictures from the camera's memory but for the better quality pictures it's nice to have a memory card. The quality of the pictures (except for when in direct light) are better than the camera that the kids are using. The reviews all said the same thing; the pictures were clear and crisp. This is very true and I was very surprised at the colors because they looked much better than real life. I think when a camera gives you better color clarity than real life, that camera is a keeper. Although the other thing that must be something that needs to be played with to get accustomed to is the zoom. I took a few pictures zooming with the digital part of the camera and the item was blurry and dark. The Polaroid that the kids were using took better zoomed in pictures, which was also disappointing. All in all I am content with the camera, its size makes it very portable and easy to carry in a purse, pants or jacket pocket, or the case I purchased for it.Read full review
Have had several Cyber-Shots and all have taken a good beating before calling it a night. Easy to use, nice pics, and small size make it a good semi-beginner cam. As matter a fact, my one day old cam received a bath of beer by some drunk lady this Satuday and survived. It got so soaked that the wrist band was drenched. All-in-all a easy to use and solid cam.
