The Rode NTG-3 is an exceptional mic; Rode's best boom mic. It produces beautiful quality sound; very rich and smooth and clear, and very quiet. I have compared it extensively to my industry standard Sennheiser MHK 416 (with spoken voice, indoors, at relatively close range.) It is almost in the same league, just a small step below. It does not capture quite as much voice "texture" and does not have quite as much midrange clarity and three dimensionality and the sound does not come from quite as black of a background. Although it is rich sounding it does not capture the deepest lows with quite as much authority. It also generates just slightly more self noise. On the other hand it is more sensitive (4-6 db) than the 416 so you can keep the gain lower which means less noise from your other electronics which at least partially offsets the slightly higher self noise. The NTG-3 and MHK 416 are virtually identical in diameter and length, but the 416 is slightly heavier. It has a SLIGHTLY wider pickup pattern than the 416, which is either a plus or minus depending upon your needs and application. To say it picks up every noise in the room as one reviewer claims in my opinion speaks much more to the reviewers lack of understanding of boom mics and/or the technique they use as opposed to anything about the mic itself. The increased emphasis on low frequencies in general and slightly less high frequency emphasis compared to the 416 make it an excellent choice for female voices. Really all voices sound great with it other than maybe the deepest male voices which may get slightly muddy. (Although that can be fixed with a little EQ.) I like the way my wife's voice sounds better on the NTG-3 and prefer the 416 for my voice. At the same time I still love the way my voice sounds with the NTG-3. The bottom line is the Rode NTG-3 is a phenomenal microphone for the price. To come as close as it does to the MKH 416 at $300 less is quite an accomplishment. Many people may not even notice the differences I pointed out above. The bomb proof easily transportable case is a great bonus also. It should serve just about any needs out there including in the professional realm. It's hard to imagine how anyone could go wrong with the purchase of the Rode NTG-3 microphone as long as they know what they are getting and how to use it. I am extremely happy with my choice to own this mic!Read full review

Great purchase, everything is working nicely and the audio is amazing. It has everything you need to get started. However the internal cable inside the boom-pole broke after my third use, which I don't really mind because I use the XLR cable that came with it.

I love this mic! It has rich warm tones as well as beautiful bright ones. It doesn't spike as easily as some other higher priced mics do, and the build quality is outstanding. I also love the fact that it comes with an indestructible metal tube case that makes it super easy to transport and worry free.
