Fantastic scenery and a strong cast, this Robin Hood has set a new standard! The script is well written, and the cast has obvious chemistry which translates into a believable story. Keith Allen (Sherrif of Nottingham) is excellent in the role, with his blithe witticisms and infuriating deviousness. Jonas Armstrong (Robin Hood) brings passion and humor the title role, although not necessarily the quintessential hero, being slight of build and stature. Lucy Griffith (Lady Marion) is an admirable counterpart to Jonas' Robin, and provides a 21st century independence and spirit to her character that is usually lacking in the role. The show is riddled with clever banter, although the storyline can drag from time to time. My favorite episodes are the season's two-part finale, Episode 12: "Return of the King" and Episode 13: "Clue: No".Read full review
This is a fast paced series that debunks the movie myths of yesteryear. The characters are not always "heroic" even Robin. He is known for his temper and stubborness in this BBC export. Maid Marian is a night crusader for the poor on the side and very definite on her views of right and wrong. The so-called romance made famous from legend and old movies does not exist in this series. Oh, they care for each other, and Robin is more prone to being more open than she (due to her sense of duty), it provides a nice friction and contrast between them. The season ends with without leaving you dangling, although King Richard has not returned and several other running threads have not been tied, but it is more satisfying if this is the end of the series. Let's hope not. This set retails for $80 and runs under 600 minutes--pricy! If you have cable with the BBC channel it is shown on Action Sunday and runs two shows a week. It is a box set worth owning. The sets are grim but fit the time era perfectly and the all British cast do well in their roles. Star Jonas Armstrong may not physically appear to be an "ideal" Robin Hood (a bit too thin and short in stature) but displays the cunning and tenacity of the character and makes it work. Lucy Griffiths as Marian (or Marion) is a bit plump but pleasing to the eye and is very good in her role as well. She's no raving beauty but she does have more "spunk" than the usual damsel in distress that so many of the Robin hood movies portray her. Worthwhile, but watch that pricing and since this is an import ensure you are getting "Region 1" and not "2" or it may not work on your player! Also, some of the newer models will not play the "all region" codes, check your manual before you invest and also see the coding on the product before you bid or purchase. Nice twist on the oft told legend.Read full review
This is THE "Robin Hood" for the year 2000. The plot of each episode is spellbinding, and the viewer becomes so involved with the story. Every character in the series has so many facets. Robin Hood is handsome and heroic, yet he has his faults. He thinks quickly to solve multiple problems and is always fighting for his countrymen. Marion is very different in this "Robin Hood", as she plays a major character role. She is bold, adventerous; and she loves her countrymen as much as Robin. Marion shares the screen with Robin here, she is not just a love interest. The Sheriff of Knottingham is evil to the core, yet there is something very likeable about him. He is so sarcastic and full of himself. Robin's merry men are delightful! And there is a girl in his band of theives, "Jack". This is quite a twist, with "Jack" being such an interesting character that everyone will like. This is a beautiful series to watch. The setting and costumes dazzle! The costumes are not your typical wardrobe garb. With a low bow to Errol Flynn, since he will always be my hero; this series is the best "Robin Hood" yet. Everything about it leaves the viewer wanting more. Don't miss this one!!!Read full review
This series is awesome. Sure we all know Robin Hood stole from the rich and gave to the poor...but thats about all we know of the story. This BBC Series takes an in-depth look at the adventures of Robin Hood and presents it in such a way to leave you on the edge of your seat wanting more. It has this way of drawing you into it. You get the range of emotions..when they are victorious you are happy, when they thwart the bad guys you are bursting with glee, and when they cry, you cry. I had seen many ads for this series and thought it was neat...then I forgot about it and recently I found a video with clips from the show played to a song and it inspired me to purchase the set to watch it. I am really glad I did, now I'm just sad that Season 2 is so new and thus so expensive. There is one disc for special features which I must admit that I haven't had time to watch but I'm sure its great too.Read full review
When I first saw this show on BBCA, I wasn't sure I would like it. I wasn't crazy about the first episode, but I decided to try it a little longer, and I do like it now. I'm glad I gave it a chance! It is a very good mixture of history and modern themes for these modern times. Certain elements to me are not needed, such as having another girl in his gang besides Maid Marian. The action is wonderful and there are a lot of original scripts that I have not seen in other action shows. Robin is still a gallant figure but I also like that he is younger than some of the other Robin Hoods portrayed in films. Younger makes him have to grow up fast because he is portrayed immature and so he has to learn by mistakes. People actually get hurt on this show and die. Some are key characters. Some are hard to let go of because you become attached and want to see then in next week's show! I recommend this show to any families who would like a cleaner show with action and true-to-life characters. I have seen no sex in these shows, as of yet. There is very little cussing or swearing. The music is riviting and inspiring as good as many feature films. I rate the first season with an A+ and hope this show lasts a few seasons more.Read full review
