Nintendo's GameBoy may have been a massive success, but when it came to arcade conversions, it didn't hold a candle to the Atari Lynx. It wasn't just the color screen or the digitized sound or the extra buttons that gave the Lynx the advantage... arcade ports just felt tighter and more accurate on the system. Roadblasters is just one example of the Lynx's superiority in capturing the coin-op experience. It features all fifty levels from the fast-paced Atari racing game, with every enemy and power-up right where they were in the original. The graphics are just as vivid, with the brightest of reds, yellows, and greens, and the sound features the same digitized voice at the start of every level... although the other sound effects have taken a hit in quality. Most importantly, the control is tighter than a rusted bolt, even without the arcade game's steering wheel, and Roadblasters is tons of fun to play, particularly in the early levels where the enemies give you a break. In the later ones, you'll need every ounce of your skill to weave through traffic and reach the finish line before your fuel tank runs dry. The game gets brutal- sometimes even unfair- by the time you've reached level thirty, since the streets are packed with invincible purple limousines and tiny mines which you probably won't see until you've driven over them. Still, as a port of the arcade game, you couldn't ask for better. Roadblasters is definitely one to own on the underappreciated Lynx.
