I bought Return to Sullivan's Island because I read the original book Sullivan's Island by Dorothea Benton Frank and LOVED IT. It was the single best beach read I had read at that point and time. Since Sullivan's Island I have read every one of her books and always enjoy them. Dorothea Benton Frank is a thoughtful writer and funny!! I always laugh out loud. I would say her books are not cheesy romances but instead read more like stories we can all relate to in real life with the extra bonus of southern humor. In return Sullivan's Island, Susan the main character of Return to Sullivan's Island goes on her dream trip to Paris France to teach for one year leaving her 23 year old daughter Beth, an aspiring writer, to house sit the magnificent and magical Island Gamble right on the beach. Frank's portrayal of a large and complicated family is humorous and precise: there's Susan, adoring and kind; Aunt Maggie, a stickler for manners; twin aunts Sophie and Allison, who run an exercise-and-vitamin empire and have very opposite personalities; and uncles Timmy and Henry, the latter of whom has ties with Beth's trust fund. Frank is frequently funny, and she weaves in a dark undercurrent that incites some surprising late-book developments. Although I love the touches of Southern magic humor and family love and drama, this was not my favorite of her books and I do wish she would have left out the one time blasphemy remark. I personally feel there is no need to go there even once. Also I got a little bored with the whole Max money scam portion. All in all it was a good read and a fun beach read.Read full review
I have enjoyed all of Dot Frank's books and always eagerly await the next one.. Each is light, fun and is about the Low Country of South Carolina which is a place I love. Although I read the book on a beach in Maine, I was transported to Sullivan's Island in a minute! I love the way she drops her friends, former characters, and locations from previous books into her plots. I also enjoy her "Acknowledgment" section---it is invariably a hoot! I have one slight criticism of this book and that is the main chracter's slang. It makes her sound more like a young teenager than a college graduate. Will be looking forward to the next book!
easy reading and a great author.
