Captain Janeway being a female captain of a starship is a brilliant refreshing concept that works for both male and female viewers. In earlier Star Trek series female admirals were often introduced to Trekies and maybe the underlying foundation that helped create an acceptance for Janeway as a Federation Starship Captain. A seven year success for the Voyager series is pretty impressive. The emotional side of Janeway is unlike Picard's stern self confident personality or Captain Kirk's my way or no way risk taking attitude we find Janeway has a tender heart concealed behind a bold exterior, occasionally she holds back tears or displays facial expressions that reveal inner pain and disappointment. The human side of Janeway makes the series more believable and humans (not aliens) can relate to what she's experiencing. However Janeway is not a sap or wimp she always side steps her emotions to do the right thing whether its popular or not. Her motive is to bring about justice and preservation to the oppressed or endangered and thats what good Captains are made of. All race's that encounter Janeway and the Voyager crew get what they deserve. The integrity Janeway lives by overrides personal desires and this nobel quality actually created the situation the Voyager crew faces being a lifespan away from loved one and friends. She blew up the only known means of going home to save a race of people from their enemy. Janeway's personal demon must be the reoccurring memory of that fateful decision and the driving force to find a way home. The Voyager crew is so diverse in race and personality yet each one is indispensable to the show. Voyager would really lack it special effect if the doctor were missing. How brilliant to introduce him as a hologram projection, he's as alive as any crew member and very often saves the crew from some alien induced disease or intruder's who attempt set up house in a human host. Wise, sensitive, curious Nelix might be considered the the Voyager clown, his terrible cooking and abrupt interruptions about some trivial matter just when the wrap core is ready to blow or the Voyager shields are down and the enemy is powering up for the kill with proton blast is the needed relief we need to bring our adrenalin back in an acceptable range. Then we have a ex-con, and an extra dry Vulcan, a tattooed second captain who must find it hard to serve under Janeway at times, (a leader always wants to lead) a rookie from the academy, and an adult alien child to round off the series. Every episode is brilliant, unique and believable. Voyager is a must have for the home collection and I find myself watching the episodes several times a year.Read full review
Years ago a friend of mine got me interested in Star Trek and i watched each episode and never got tired of them. Then the Next Generation came out and it was good and it ran for 7 yrs and i watched each episode over and over again. Then the Star Trek Franchise came out with Star Trek Trek Deep Space Nine and it took some time to come around and i did and 7 yrs later it ended. By the time Star Trek Voyager i was burned out i watched some of season 1 but lost interest. Recently they started showing Voyager on cable and my interest was renewed
