This was a good book. It was very detailed, which can be good or bad depending on the reader. The technical details are surprisingly thorough, and take a far more prominent than some of his other novels. While character development is certainly present in the story the book packs characters from across a global war in, and so while each character feels real, they don't get a full fleshing out that I've come to expect from his other novels, where single characters are developed over the course of 2, 3, or more books. The one exception being Lieutenant Edwards, no more a important character than the rest, but I feel as if Tom Clancy wanted him to be "the hero" or perhaps star in another book later. The character gets a pretty decent story, some tough choices, and even some revealing back story. His story did end abruptly, he gets the girl and seems to be happily ever after, and then thats it, the book moves on. Understandable, because the book is not about him, and he had served his part in the story. Thats not to say it wasn't a good book. The story was fully developed, and seemed to span months. It was a little hard to track time at some points, but eventually it all fell into place. I'm giving the book a Excellent rating, but If you are more into characters and less into the technical details and strategies of war, you might enjoy it a little less, but I feel even then the story would redeem itself. The book I believe can stand on it's own, right up there with the Jack Ryan stories he's written.Read full review
I am a huge Clancy fan. In my opinion, this is the best book he's ever written. I've read it three times. If it was made into a movie, the budget would have to be over a billion for it to be done right. It is about a conventional WW III in Europe. The Soviets are faced with total collapse after an attack on their largest petroleum facility. So they come up with a plan to seize oil fields in the Middle East, but to make it seem like they're defending themselves by doing so. This results in a NATO response that is described in great detail by Clancy. He's the best by far at this type of writing. You get to know alot of characters from theater commanders to sub commanders to individual military pilots. This is one of his older books, so it's got a Cold War feel. That may make it outdated for some, but if you don't read this you're missing one of the best ever books in this genre. If you're just getting into Clancy, you'll be doing yourself a big favor by reading them in the order he wrote them. His characters tend to show up in multiple books. The most notable example of this is John Ryan. He is first mentioned as a lowly analyst for a certain gov't agency. His character progresses through several Clancy books and he eventually becomes President of the United States. Tom Clancy is the best writer in this genre, and this is the best of Clancy.Read full review
I first read. Red Storm Rising when it was first published. I was on active duty at the time and the only copy I could get my hands on had gone through too many readers and didn’t even have a cover. Reading it again. I find that it’s still a page turner and complete with technical military specifics. I being a retired Marine Staff NCO was familiar with most. I am glad to have been able to re read this masterpiece.

I love Clancy. Note that Ryan is not a character in this book. This story has good characters, but the real story is military technology, tactics, and strategy.
