No other singer even comes close to the sound of Mildred Bailey. Hers was a combination of vivacity and delicacy, with rhythmic pulse you can take to the bank...and a vivid projection of the meaning of the song, whether sad, funny or 1930s-hip. The young arranging genius Eddie Sauter wrote these arrangements for the orchestra that Bailey co-led with her husband Red Norvo. Red played the xylophone with swing and subtlety that also must be heard. The Norvo-Bailey combination was billed as "Mr. and Mrs. Swing" and their recordings exemplify something fine in american music, pretty much the way Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers show how classic American movies could be. There's a nice CD on Circle, too, just as good; or blow the rent money on the Mosaic set that has loads of Bailey recordings. Most every selection turns out to be one you can listen to repeatedly, or go back to after years, and marvel at how tasty swing could be.Read full review
