THE REAL PHOTO POSTCARD GUIDE is a real standout. It is simply a beautiful book! It is a large, hardcover book with glossy pages, hundreds of quality images, most reproduced at almost full-size, and hundreds of pages of well written, informative text! Subjects covered include: the “Fundamentals” such as identifying real photo cards, as well as their dates, locations and photographers. Also included are, “Photographers and Careers” and “Dimensions of Desirability” such as technical quality, composition, condition, historical importance, etc. “Collecting Categories,” caring for real photo cards and researching photographers are covered, as well. All of this is followed by an appendix that helps one to date real photo postcards and an “abbreviated roster” with biographies of several hundred photo postcard photographers. In addition, there are six pages of “References” beginning with an article by Douglas Aikenhead and ending with a book by Michael Zwerdling. In other words, the “References” are exhaustive from A to Z, just like the twelve page index from “adhesive” to “Zercher, Theodore Thomas (Ted).” The REAL PHOTO POSTCARD GUIDE is a great combination of scholarly work, presented with all of the scholarly bells and whistles, and yet it is published “coffee table book” style that could attract those with little or no real previous interest in postcards and yet educate even the serious collector. For the sake of the authors and the hobby, I hope it does. It’s a book with substance and style!Read full review
