If you're looking for "Trouble" II, don't look here. In this offering, Ray has spun a far different web. Right from the outset you know you're in for a much different experience. Unlike other artists that can so easily be "typecast," Ray, like Joni Mitchell, conceives it, weaves it, and heaves it out there, like it or not. "Till The Sun Turns Black" is a wonderful experience in and of itself. Ray explained that, except for the final song, these songs are laid out chronologically, telling the stories of life and love, directly from the artist's heart. My favorite piece is "Empty," a wonderful little ditty. Overall, Ray presents an eclectic array of songs and styles here. When it's all said and done, we'll look back on this disc as an interesting departure on a wonderful journey.Read full review
I bought his first cd, "Trouble", when it came out in 2003, and it is still in constant rotation on my ipod. I couldn't wait until Ray's next cd came out, but after waiting two or three years, I started to give up hope. Then, at last, Till the Sun Turns Black was released. I am elated with my choice and it's just as quality as the first cd. No sophomore slump on this cd. I commend Ray on his work, and look forward to more.
This album from Ray LaMontagne stands as one of the finest acoustically-driven albums I have ever heard. The first song, "Be Here Now," is one of the best songs I have ever heard. Ray brings an incredible mix of smooth vocals and engaging melodies to his songs. His music is also quite diverse. He does not find a sound that works and then comfortably stick with it through the album's entirety. Instead, he seems to find a number of sounds that work. For me, the first three songs are the album's best. After "Be Here Now" come "Empty" and "Barfly," two more incredible songs that point to why LaMontagne is such a terrific upcoming talent. I anticipate someday owning all of his albums.
It's difficult for me to place this in a specific category of music. There are some jazz flourishes, but mainly it's moody, soothing and folksy. The arrangements are simple and adequate. Mr. Lamontagne is a good singer/songwriter and the CD itself has excellent sonics. Put your headphones on and enjoy!

Ray Lamontagne is a lyrical genius and this album is a testament to that fact. To anyone who has not listened to Ray should and I hope everyone does. The album was pretty different from the first, but it still worked. There are a couple of tracks that I did not care for like, Can I stay, and Truly Madly Deeply. But as for the album as a whole I thought it was fantastic. I just saw Ray in Nashville a couple of weeks ago and his shows are stripped down with no horns or any kinda of extras and the it was just incredible. I recommend Ray to anyone.
