This is an interesting, twisted take on marriage, affairs, emotions, and mistakes. Harrison Ford always gives a believable performance, and though I like his leading lady, I felt like her heart wasn't really into the part in this film. Perhaps, if the script spent a little more time developing the characters, it would be easier to understand where they were coming from in their reactions...... BUT...... I have to keep in mind that this was a 1999 film and things were different then. Sydney Pollack's direction was a bit lacking..... sort of focused on the death that should have propelled this movie into a really interesting examination of emotions resulting from it. Instead of exploring those emotions and bringing them to life, they are continually plunged back into some 'death bog' that never allows them to live in the present. Anyone younger than about 60 would scoff at the lack of 'technology' and 'security'...... at my age, it was an enjoyable journey to a time when things were more relaxed and people were less defensive.Read full review

Dutch Van den Broeck (Harrison Ford) is a Washington D.C. police sergeant. His wife is a fashion magazine writer/producer, and her job often takes her away to various locations for photo shoots and related work. Their relationship is solid and loving. On a business trip to Florida, her plane crashes and there are no survivors. Republican Congresswoman Kay Chandler (Kristin Scott Thomas), who is campaigning for reelection, gets a phone call and a visit from representatives of the airline to inform her that her husband was also killed in the same crash. She has a teenage daughter and insists that it can't be her husband because he was not going to Florida, but to Boston on business. Dutch contacts the airline and they have no record of his wife being on the flight. As he digs further, he finds out that his wife was traveling under an assumed name with Chandler, and they were obviously having an affair. He contacts the Congresswoman who is still in denial, and only seeking information, is rebuffed by her. In a Miami assembly hall of family and relatives they meet. Both are grief stricken and in denial, but the facts don't lie. As their sojourn to find out just what happened, and for how long, he determines that this wasn't their first trip together. Eventually, an apartment "love nest" is also discovered in D.C. Their loneliness and grief brings them together as a crutch for each other.
