The composer Rachmaninov made his living as a pianist, and it is well known that one of his great pleasures was playing four-hand piano music, including his own Suites for two pianists, but even transcriptions of orchestral music. As Baker relates in his liner notes, the composer worked through the Third Concerto with Horowitz, playing the orchestral score at a second piano. Baker also recalls that the first time he heard the Rachmaninoff Cello Sonata, he thought to himself, what a great piano sonata, and there's a cello too! The work is, indeed, practically a piano sonata with a cello obbligato part, with a typically dense and athletic piano part paired with a relatively simple cantabile cello part. So, it is safe to say that there is nothing especially sacrilegious about Baker's work here. The real question is, does he add anything to the party? My answer is an unqualified yes. The changes in texture that the piano reveals in the cello solo and the orchestral score are significant and illuminating, and Baker's execution of this projects vibrant and technically assured. It is rather startling to hear the vertical pulse of the orchestral music for the concerto on the piano, rather than the linear flow of the strings, but it underscores the superb sense of architecture and texture that can be taken for granted in the orchestral version. Baker precedes the Concerto reduction with his own brief homage to the composer, a sweet and idiomatic tip of the hat to a larger than life musician, as is, for that matter, this whole production.
