Escape to northern Minnesota
Bought this book to read for the times I want to escape the real world and its problems. This book suits that need with its detailed nature descriptions, non threatening encounters with wildlife, and the strong committed relationship the author shares with her husband despite their struggles making a life in the wilds of northern Minnesota. Would recommend if you enjoy that kind of reading.

a place in the woods
I first read this book as a young girl. It was just as sweet when I reread it just recently. Helen and Adrian Hoover tell of their life after they chucked successful careers in Chicago to move to the woods along a lake up at the Canadian border in the 50's. It was interesting to me to see how many of her attitudes had been incorporated into my own from that early reading. She loved her woods and the creatures that lived in them, but without the silly sentimentality that so often seems to permeate these days. Creation is here for us to enjoy. We are its caretakers, true, but not to put it on some pedestal as if every snail and tree and swamp were a thing more valuable than people, but as something that enriches us. Mrs. Hoover's tales ring true and because of that they touch the heart in a way that the syrupy animals-are-our-brothers crowd could never achieve. I recommend all her books as worth while. Her husband's illustrations are wonderful, too.Read full review

The title says it all. A Place in the Woods!
This book grabbed my attention from the start. I probably would not have kept the mice as friends but her dealings with the other animals were delightful. I would reccomend this book to anyone and everyone.
