Allan Menezes is a clear and precise instructor in this DVD which takes the viewer step by step, through a series of exercises designed to strengthen the muscles that support the lower back. Interestingly, it's the lower stomach muscles that are the ones that require the most work to support the lower back. I have suffered lower back pain for nearly 12 years, and after doing the exercises 3 times a week for 2 weeks I was out of pain completely. However, expect to continue doing the exercises at least once a week to maintain muscle tone or you'll start to suffer again. This DVD is intended for those people suffering muscular back pain, so before you buy this DVD, make sure you get your back checked out by your GP to rule out the possibility that you have a slipped disc or worse.
Having recently started Pilates, I decided I'd like to be able to do it at home. The reason I wanted to start Pilates was to strengthen my abdominals, to in turn strengthen my back. This DVD targets abdominals and lower back and is intended for chronic lower back pain, rather than acute episodes. I think the exercises are effective at achieving this. Explanations and demonstrations are clear and graphic. The viewer quickly develops trust in the instructor leading the exercises as he explains how each exercise works and what area of the body it is working on. The breathing, central to the effectiveness of this exercise form, which I think is one of the most difficult concepts to grasp, is also explained very thoroughly. I would recommend this DVD if you have lower back pain, or simply want to focus on stregthening your abdominals.Read full review
