Although Perestroika was written in the late eighties, it is a valuable insight to the world of Socialism from one of the world's leading socialists. You can get an inside view of the struggles and politics of the USSR through Gorbachev. The USSR had been declining in production and social order over a period of time. Without major changes, a collapse was forthcoming. The existing regime was complacent and corrupt thru years of neglect and unaccountability. Mr. Gorbachev wanted to sincerely make the painful yet necessary changes. It was a difficult task with a mix of support and antagonists. He knew that democratic formulas needed to be implemented in the social and economic areas and all across the union. Ultimately through the painful process, loose planning and inept execution seem to have contributed to the disintegration of the USSR. Corruption and rebellion among the ranks contributed also. Some of the changes were hard to accept or enforce and could not be executed as thought. Mr.. Gorbachev's intention was to keep the USSR unified but was compelled to resign in 1991. In my opinion, the restructuring Gorbachev visualized never materialized. What he did accomplish was the breakup of the communist status quo. Free speech, assembly and participation in democratic type elections were some of the other results. But as I already knew, Mr. Gorbachev said the fall of the Berlin wall was not the fall of Socialism. The previous Communist type system which nearly destroyed the USSR, was not reimposed. Now that Mr. Putin has been leader of the new republics, Perestroika in which Gorbachev envisioned has changed... Actually most of the world does or will embrace Socialism but with its humanistic values and atheistic approach another major restructuring will eventually occur.Read full review
