I have a become a fan of the Tony Hillerman Navajo Country mysteries, of which this is one. They are an interesting mix of gritty mystery, great characters, and learning about Navajo culture in a respectful way. I can't put them down. I learned about the books through the TV series Dark Winds, which I really enjoy. The TV series drew heavily on this particular book, and the book came with much more detail in terms of story. But the TV series uses indigenous actors/writers/directors, which brings so much They inform each other well.

Terrific introduction to the series, featuring Jim Chee (the younger of Hillerman's two Navajo policemen). Full of insights. Unusually atmospheric. Easy to see why Tony Hillerman was chosen a few years ago as a favorite writer by English teachers. Great plot, skillfully written (perfectly paced). Great villains too. Read the first paragraph and see for yourself!
Good story. Interesting characters!
