This is one of Julia Roberts' less-known films but it deserves to be one of the most watched. Law student Darby Shaw (Julia Roberts) stumbles on the theory of an improbable conspiracy that happens to be true and, in so doing, makes herself a target of the conspirators. After she tells her story to an investigative reporter (Denzel Washington) the pair team up to piece together the conspiracy while potential witnesses die around them. The screenplay has all the hallmarks of John Grisham and Alan Pakula and manages to maintain high tension and drama in a series of unlikely situations. The result is a credible and frightening picture of power in politics. Similar to "The Firm" in its matching of ingenuous honesty against ruthless power, the film holds the viewer's attention and contains some deft touches. It is certainly a film to watch, maybe a film to own.Read full review
Very thought provoking movie in light of the current political climate in this country. How do you influence laws? Simple, you get rid of all of those votes on the Supreme Court that don't agree with your ideas, and replace them with your own kind of thinkers. This is what has happened in this movie. Only instead of health care or some other liberal ideas, this time it is to get favorable votes for a big time contributor who wants to drill for oil where the environmental impact says that it is too dangerous. Sort of sounds familiar, but just reversed today. Ban all oil drilling. . .but, loan our money to other countries to drill so that they can drill and we can pay five times more for their oil rather than drill our own. What better way to destroy our economy. This is a good movie, and you'll enjoy it. . .maybe even learn something too - If you watch it with your eyes and your mind open.Read full review
Having already owned the The Firm and The Client, two other films based on John Grisham novels, I just had to pick up this item as well to complete my unoffical trilogy of the first three films of Grishams first three works. All three are excellent, above average action/suspense escapism! Though this ones probably the lesser of the three, it is more than recommended for fans of the genre. Featuring superstars Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington at their most likable and a who's who supporting cast of character actors!
This is a great movie, a bit different from the book, but great. I kind of wish they could have fit a few more scenes from the book into it, because they answer a few unanswered questions, but all in all this is an amazing movie. Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington are truly great in this movie. Trying to figure out who is doing what is something that you try to do through out the movie, although there is one man who is the main "doer". If you really pay attention to the movie, you can finally figure out who the person behind all or most of it is. This is a great action movie and we watch it more than just about any other movie we have. Some things you don't expect and some you may figure out, but it doesn't make this a dull movie by any means. I just replaced my first dvd because it just kind of wore out by all the usage! This is definately one for your collection, you'll watch it for years and never get tired of it. Sit back and enjoy it, it's well worth your time to see it.Read full review
