Burke is a moralist in the tradition of Ross Macdonald. His books while on one level are good "beach reads" they also are works that stay with you long after the potboilers have been tossed in the bins on the sand. While there is a repetativeness to the last few Roubichaux books, you can't go wrong with a James Lee Burke of any stripe. Go back to the beginning and read them all and you'll be in a world that respects both entertainment and existential philosophy. You can have your cake and eat it too with Burke and Pegasus Descending is a great read. Patrick Cronin
I bought this book because I never pass on this author. I've loved Dave's family and friends and life on the teche for a long time now. Recently it seems that Dave's life is getting darker and his adventures more intense. This book feel as though Molly is the twine that is holding him together now and I wouldn't be surprised if "life" didn't just overwhelm him in the near future...Dave is a very angry man of integrity...and an alcoholic. Go Dave! Hang in there.
When one has occasion to purchase one of Mr. Burke's novels, one has come to expect a sensational book, so that again he has risen to the challenge and delivered yet another most excellent book. He is also a real gentleman you will never be disappointed by James Lee Burke. I, for one, am looking forward to the Day Mr. Burke writes his autobiography. Jack Piper
Mr. Burke ,one of my favorite authors hits the nail on the head with his latest Dave Robichaux novel. No one can capture the essence of the deep south the way he does. His characters are so real. The situations so believable. I look forward to the next offering from this great writer.
Any fan of James Lee Burke will not be disapppointed by this installment of the series. If you haven't read James Lee Burke/Dave Robicheaux books are in for a treat. I highly recommend this author.
