Great little unit for recording on the go and extreamly easy to use. you can program the unit to record in a matter of seconds and the picture quality is excellent. Very simple menu system is very intuitive and uses an icon driven system. Much better than a vcr and has comercial skip (very handy). Cons: Relativly small hard drive 40gb, although still get ~40 hours of TV quality video on it. Only 8 hours at high quality.
The DMR-HS2 recorder is a great starter unit or (as we have used it) as a second HDD recorder. The 40gb hard drive is a bit undersized to handle all of your recording needs, but it's hard to beat for the going prices that I have seen lately on eBay. For those of us that REFUSE to go back in time 30 years and put a digital set-top box on our TV, (but rather stick with the good-ole' analog cable coming out of the wall) this unit is marvelous. I have been the proud owner of a Panasonic DMR-E80H DVD/HDD 80gb recorder for some 5 years now. I originally paid $650 for it when I bought it for my wife for her Christmas present. To this day she still says it was the greatest present she has ever received because it allows her to store up the kinds of programs she wants to watch when she wants to watch them. I currently pay Comcast $9/mo for local only analog stations and we just record up all of the good content that we can on the HDD. The DVD player/recorder portion of our DMR-E80H stopped working about a year ago and we have hesitated to get it fixed as technical support for these units is hard to come by. So purchasing the used DMR-HS2 off of eBay for $136 was a really good deal for us. It gave us back our ability to record a movie onto the HDD, edit out all of the commercials, then transfer to DVD for future plays. I was surprised to find that the DMR-HS2 is really the same operating interface as the DMR-E80H. When I bought it I was afraid that the HS2 had a 'beta' interface, but that just wasn't the case. Setting up recordings, editing, dubbing are all excellent with this recorder. If you are like me and are happy with the analog variety of cable, then this recorder will treat you right!Read full review
