This is a good recorder if you're good with technology and don't mind programming the unit yourself for the shows you want to see - either once, weekly or M-F. There is no feature that automatically records based on a favorite actor, show, etc., because this is not a Tivo and nor does it required a monthly subscription. You can record to either the hard drive or directly to a dvd. You can also dub from the hard drive to a dvd, if for example you want to edit out commercials or any other extraneous material. The biggest drawback to this unit is that it needs an analog signal, not a digital signal. That means it won't work if you have digital cable. This has a 100 GB hard drive so it can hold a whole season's worth of shows and it records in SP, LP or EP. Since it is an analog recorder you won't get the best picture available though.Read full review
The Panasonic DMR-EH50 is "Simply The Best" consumer DVR-DVD Burner I have ever used. Though a little confusing at first, after a read through the manual (I know no-one want to use the manual) it is logical in it's design and function. Good quality and robust design means that this is a unit that can be repaired and rebuilt a number of times in it's life. I now have three of these units (2 operational and 1 for parts). The primary failure of these units over time will be capacitor swell which is easily repaired via replacement of the capacitors on the power supply board and the control board (repair instruction available on internet). Two of my units have been brought back to life this way (my third unit would only require a new hard drive to restore it's operations). Since these units are no longer manufactured the repairability is a very important factor when purchasing used units. Although many people are using computers for this function, since over the air analog signals (non-digital cable) are rapidly becoming a thing of the past, as a transfer and quick edit recorder for archival storage these units are great. They record and playback standard DVD's not BlueRay, so another reason they are no longer being manufactured for the North American consumer market. Read full review

If you can find one in good condition... I have quite a few that aren't. There's a newer "black" model with HDMI output, that I don't think was sold in the U.S.

THis is a great DVR device - my first one developed a problem in writing DVD's after I created over 1500 DVD's of things I recorded off of broadcast/cable since first purchased 6 yrs ago. Bought a used one off eBAy becuz there is no comparable product for price and value sold new today in the US. Cannot understand whyPanasonic gave up selling these in USA. The product allows editting of clips down to the frame level, recording at 5 speeds with great quality, preprogramming recording times/dates/channels without any limit I have encountered, creation of mulitple clips per DVD, recombining clips, titling, and a varietuy of outputs. Has no HDMI plug, the TVGuide funciton is awkward and clunky - I never use it. I wish it had a generic HD and generic DVD writer that could be easily replaced by the owner - which would extend the useful life greatly. Allowiunbg an external HD would also be nice. Another minus - you cannot re3cord a DVD in the tray to the HD. Given this is a 6 year old product in 2012 I rate it as excellent - if this was sold new in USA today I would downgrade it to 4 stars only because of these features it does not have.Read full review
I purchased this recorder to replace one that had finally given up the ghost. Since they're not made anymore, a used one was the best I could find and I'm very satisfied with it. It is pretty much the same as the one I had except for a few minor glitches, such as a dimmed display screen and a remote that is set to only one RC channel. I use my old remote, which is set on RC channel 2. It gives me plenty of recording time without having to pay for a subscription fee and it allows me to edit video. True, it doesn't record in HD, but most of what I record doesn't need to be. All-in-all, a good experience so far.
