Over all, this remake of Poltergeist is about equal to the original. The characters' names have been changed (Carol-Ann is now Maddy), and the elderly lady psychic with the high-pitched voice has been replaced by a male reality-TV-show psychic. Otherwise, this is a virtual remake of the original, with one significant improvement. In the original, the parents are so focused on their little girl that they appear not to care so much about their son. In the remake, the son is established as a nervous, overly anxious child. At first, only the two youngest children witness the supernatural events; the little girl isn't afraid, and when she mentions the ghost, her parents assume it's an imaginary friend. The little boy is scared, and the parents do pay attention to him, but they attribute his fear to his usual over-reacting. In this version, the boy has a chance to overcome his fear and grow as a character, rather than being ignored when scary things happen to him because his parents are so worried about Carol-Ann. There is no sex, no gore, and the ghosts are not grotesque. If your kids aren't traumatized by Harry Potter movies, they can handle Poltergeist.Read full review
