Ever since the 70s I"'ve wondered about the musical Pippin and if it was good because I love musicals and now I finally know. I was really disappointed because the story is weak and the characters are strange. I couldn"t identify with any one of them. The only good things in the musical are some of the songs and the dancing. The best two songs are the first two and after that it"s downhill from there. Ben Vereen and William Katt were fun and brought a sense of Broadway to the show but overall the DVD was not worth buying and the picture quality wasn"t anything special.

The Pippin DVD, 2000 Special Edition copy, is an updated version of the 1981 performance, directed by David Sheehan with electric actors like Ben Vereen and William Katt playing two major roles, among the other incredible actors. Parts of this DVD can be viewed on popular online video sites, which is how I found out about this play and developed my interest. While there have been many productions of Pippin, I find this the best one you can find online. The only shortfalls I can register is the absence of 'I Guess I'll Miss the Man', likely by director's choice; and the quality of the DVD which, while good, is not stellar compared to other recordings in 2000.
Pippin: For the purest the DVD will be a disapointment. If you saw the musical back in 1972, you will miss some of the original cast. This version was filmed while the show was on tour in Canada some nine years later. Ben Vereen still steals the show. What talent! Martha Ray mugs her part; it's over the top and doesn't do justice to the role that Irene Ryan played to perfection. Pippin (William Katt)is fine, but John Rubinstein was better. And how I missed Jill Clayburgh's version of "I Guess I'll Miss The Man." With all these reservations aside, the DVD will still make a contribution to anyone who collects Broadway Shows. Like the opening number, there is "Magic To Do." Wow, what a way to start a show. Broadway today....take a look at this!
This is a video recording of a stage play. The sound quality of the DVD reflects this fact and with this in mind, it's a reasonably good quality "live" DVD. I saw Pippin on Broadway decades ago (with John Rubenstein in the lead role.) I loved the play back then and this DVD brought back many fond memories. William Katt is excellent as Pippin. Ben Vereen is in a role tailor-made for his talents. The role really captures his charisma. The other actors are also very, very good in their respective parts--especially Ben Rayson as Charlemagne. The choreography is classic Fosse. I'd rather see Pippin again live on stage BUT this DVD is a nice substitute (and much less expensive than theater tickets.)
