The gameplay itself is very good for an older flight simulator. good graphics and easier on older hardware. Only drawback is the clunky interface.

The X-Plane 9 software installation is very simple, as is the online update. This program installs without changing or adding anything to the computer registry or any other existing computer files, folders or settings. Everything is installed in one (and only one) new folder on your desktop. Uninstall only requires deleting this one folder. No leftovers. No bloatware, spyware, etc. This is great. From only a few days of use, I have found nothing to complain about. This X-Plane flight simulator is professional, comprehensive, realistic, stable and easy to setup, use and understand. (I am a licensed private pilot, Cessna 172.) The online web support is exceptionally good. (I am using a six year old Dell 4600 computer, 2.66 GHz single-core, Pentium 4 processor, with 2Gb ram memory, Nivida Geforce 6200 512Mb graphics card, Saitek ProFlight rudder and yoke controls; and X-Plane runs well on my computer at about 30fps with reasonable settings. If I had a better computer, 60plus fps performance with full resolution could be expected. Overall - really nice software.)Read full review
The simulation of the X-Plane makes you feel close to real pilots. The landscape details are superior even to the extended textures in FSX, controls of the airplanes are as close to the real ones as it gets. Reality breathes into your neck: e.g.: Take off and flight with one engine off requires 5-10 degrees bank to the operating engine and does not work with the velocity less than failed engine one. If you want to execute a slip to increase sink rate - it works unlike in FSX. Pedals allow to control yaw and produce both roll and bank changes like in the real airplanes. Overall experience is different from FSX and is neither better or worse. The shortcomings in usability are compensated with more detailed and higher quality simulation of flight and terrain.
Purchased X-Plane on eBay - fortunately as the price is much higher in the store. When loading it (I have a couple other professional flight sim packages), I found it to be poorly documented and more difficult to set up than other packages. Each individual control stick, axis control, throttle, mixture, prop setting has to be custom tailored to your controller despite the software recognizing the controller. While the reality of the scenery is a notch above MS Flight Sim X, it leaves much to be desired on being current - even some of the altitudes represented are unrealistic. I do not find it a better tool for IFR recurrent training than, so, On Top - another flight sim package targeting the same market. Plane-X seems more like a gamer's program than a true flight sim program.
