This movie features great music. Rock and Roll! The young cast did a fine job. For most of the actors, this was their only role, not to include Matt Dillon, in his first role. This would be the beginning of 25+ years in the business. He was "the love" of my life during my younger years. Vincent Spano also great. I had not seen this movie for probably 10-15 years but as soon as I put the dvd in, it all came back to me. I know this movie word for word. I enjoyed watching it. I recommend this movie to others, especially those who grew up in the late 70's and early 80's or the current young gerneration as this is a classic.
1979 was certainly a great year for entertainment, with some memorable feature films. In recent years I've added Over the Edge, Roller Boogie, Meatballs, and Breaking Away to my growing DVD collection. I highly recommend them all to anyone who has not yet experienced this wonderful trip back in time to(much)better days. Many times I've read about how hopeless the tone of Over the Edge can be. Well, that depends on how one looks at it. Sure, the neighborhood looks barren, with few people, very little entertainment for the youngsters, and greedy (what else?) land developers who care only about "resale value". I prefer to look at it more positively. A small community could mean a family atmosphere, knowing all your neighbors, and knowing whom to trust and whom not to trust. Now that doesn't mean that New Granada couldn't have used a bowling alley, cinema, or roller rink, because it could have. The neighborhood I live in was built at the same time as New Granada (1979), but we have plenty that they didn't have. The producers of the film have commented on how there are no sympathetic adults, but I think Carl's mother (played well by Ellen Geer)is just about the only nice adult in Over the Edge. Another thing I've noticed is the unusually attractive juvenile delinquents. From looking at them you would never believe they are a bunch of drugged up, disrespectful, vandalizing hooligans. There are no tattoos, no piercings, no crew cuts, no unsightly, over-sized clothing, no cellular phones, no rap music. Hallelujah! It's just the escape someone like me is looking for. It's a shame the rec center was demolished near the end of the movie. It was all they had. By the time the movie was over, all the teenagers had were criminal records and a lengthy sentence at "the Hills". No, breaking a few windows and setting a few cars on fire just wasn't worth it. Carl (Michael Eric Kramer) handled himself quite well, despite being new to acting. Actually, everyone gave a splendid performance in this movie. Today's "movie makers" and "actors" could learn a lot from them. But I doubt they will.Read full review
I remember seeing this movie when i was the same age as the kids that were in it. It shows you just how teens will behave when put into a community with nothing to do. like myself you are going to get in trouble with nothing to do. I think it is on the extreme edge as far as what teens will do. But when you look at what is happening today, it is not that far fetched. the ironic part of the movie is it was filmed back in the late 70's only 10-20 miles from columbine high school where that horrible shooting occured. I'm sure neither of those two kids seen this movie, but when i heard that it kind of shocked me. I have my wifes two teenage sisters living with us, and we make sure they have enough to do to stay out of trouble. i personally know what happens when you have free time, and that is the story of the movie. i recommend anyone interested in teen problems to watch this movie. It may be old, but it still happens todayRead full review
Over The Edge was a pretty good movie. It depicts bored kids growing up in a planned community that start to get restless. Add unconcerned parents, teachers and one overbearing police officer and it's only a matter of time before these kids blow. A couple of future stars would come out of this movie. Matt Dillon and Vincent Spano went on to become Hollywood stars. Never knew what happened to Pamela Ludwig, the tough little pretty girl with the strawberry blonde hair. Never the less, it was a real good movie with a topic that's still relevant today. Keep kids occupied or they'll turn on you.
I couldnt believe that they had this movie on DVD until I checked on E-bay. This movie is very hard to find, but well worth it. I saw this movie on HBO, and again, never saw it after that. They dont even carry this title in alot of the video stores around here. This one has a very good storyline, and it was based on true events that happened back in the 70's. It stars Matt Dillon and Vincent Spano when they were teenagers. Drugs, teen rebellion, and one heck of an ending. I m not going to say anything more than that. You will have to find it, buy it, watch it, and you will definitely like it.
