This book is narrated from the perspective of a teenager named Ponyboy, struggling to get through life because he is a 'greaser' (considered a low-life in the societal ladder). He associates with other greasers who are also in the same boat struggling and searching for meaning in their lives. The 'socials' (rich and privileged people) despise the greasers and get into occasional fights with them. Almost all the greasers get beaten up because of the prejudice exhibited by the socials. In the process, Ponyboy's best friend (Johnny) ends up killing one of the socials (Bob) out of self-defence, and they have to run from the law. The 2 teens manage to hide in an old run-down church building. When both of the boys were out looking for food, fire engulfed the wooden building. They ran back and discovered that some children were trapped within. Braving the flames, both Ponyboy and Johnny went in to save them. Both were acknowledged as heroes and this was reported in the newspapers. However, Johnny suffered severe burns and died while in hospital. Ponyboy and his fellow greasers were devastated, but they learnt one of life's lessons - giving up one's life in order to save another. This book reminds us to cherish what we have, especially our family and friends, because one day it might be too late to act.Read full review
