Back in 2000, someone mentioned the name Billy Gilman to me, but because he was a country artist, I never did listen to him. Well seven years later, (a few days ago) my local country station was having a "throwback" day where they played old hits and I happened to flip to it just when "One Voice" was playing and I was instantly in tears because it was so beautiful. Who would have thought that a boy, who was 12-yrs old when he recorded the song, could sing so beautifully. The song itself deals with school violence and how a boy is praying for his voice to be heard - for peace to come about and by the end of the song, it does. I rushed out to by the CD as soon as the song ended. Billy Gilman is one of the few country artists in the world that can have me groovin one minute and then, having me cry my eyes out the next. A perfect example of this is a comparision between two of his other songs: "I Wanna Get To Ya" and "Oklahoma". In "I Wanna Get To Ya", which is fun and upbeat, Billy talks about how he would do anything to be with this one special girl. In "Oklahoma", he talks about how a boy is finally reunited with his biological father after spending all his life in foster care. These mood swings make the CD that much more enjoyable. He also redid "I Think She Likes Me", which was originally done by the Moffatts and to me, is much better than the original. He also did his own redition of "Little Bitty Pretty One" by adding more of a country twang to it. Speaking of country accent and twang in "The Snake Song", Billy shows off just how country he can be, his accent standing strong, while singing a silly tone about a king snake who ends up falling in love with a garden house (lol). In "What's Forever For", Billy talks about how he's seen people breaking apart and going their seperate ways. In one line, he says: "I've been listening to people and they say love is the key/If love doesn't last forever, what's forever for?" "There's A Hero" is a song dedicated to all the everyday heroes that are often overlooked and took for granted,(Ex: parents, doctors, police force, etc) but it also recognizes those with a strong will and those who try their hardest to make it from day to day. In short, the reason I bought this CD was for the songs. I know that sounds lame, but ever since I heard "One Voice" on the radio and had heard that this album had gone double platnium (Billy is the youngest artist to ever have a platnium album - in ANY genre EVER) I knew that it would be worth checking into. Of course, he is older now and has a much deeper voice, but this has inspired me to look into his other albums as well. I usually hate country music, but I have the upmost respect for Billy Gilman.Read full review
I've owned this CD for a couple of years now, actually bought it for my son. He loved it esp. loved the snake song because the song appeals to young boys like mine between the ages of 7 and 11. Billy and the crew must have had that in mind when they put this together. It's a great CD with lots a feeling and good clean listening for all ages. If you haven't checked out the Billy Gilman web site I recommend it you learn alot about Billy and what the current happenings are with him with this CD as well as the others that he's done. I plan on buying others I also bought Heart Songs by Billy Gillman and enjoy it just as much as One Voice.
I loved this CD, especially considering this was a 12 year old boy singing these songs! Adding his talent to wonderful classics like "There's a Hero" and "'Til I Can Make It On My Own" makes for beautiful music- songs you never get tired of listening to, it's that sweet. The two featured hits are "Oklahoma" and "One Voice." There are some fun upbeat songs too like "I Think She Likes Me" and "Little Bitty Pretty One" that make you want to get up and dance. An incredible young voice; this CD is a must-have.
