...all but the fact that I was expecting this record to be more 'monumental' than what I presumed on first listen of 'War in Peace'. I had accidentally come across this tune on youtube and fell in love with it on first listen. His image and time era were also big sellers to me, in that these days I appreciate music that was made more from the heart (even if it was a mad one) than the spiffy moderns, although some have proved to be worthwhile. BUT, this record is not completely genius. It can be more like a careless drunk stumble through certain tracks and a rickety-rackety country rumble through others, then on to trippy psychedelic wandering. It's enjoyable yes, if you have it on in the background while painting your house, or playing video games, or smoking a lot of weed.
This is a cd I have avoided for a very long time. It is Brilliant as the germ for a work in progress. It showed me (1) how escential this man was to the group Moby Grape and why their musical chemistry was lit on fire when he arrived as the last member to join, way back when. Skip's lyrics are as great as any of the top writers in history and his melodies are new and fresh. His vocal character is unlike anyone else and it lures you in to his story, like the voice of a great novelist. The production of this work could be revisited to bring out more of his vocal audablilty...many things "could be done with it". It is a demo of a work in progress. The addition of his extra song ideas is interesting as a document. Had he lived to finish it, we would have seen OAR go to another level. I absolutely LOVE it! Stewart BrownRead full review
A highly recommended title...not that impressed but the quality of the disk is very good.

Skip Spence was a member of some famous psyche bands such as Quicksilver Messenger Service, Moby Grape, and Jefferson Airplane, so he had the goods. But he also had a six-month stint in Bellevue Hospital. After his release he recorded Oar, an album that leaves critics, musicians, and music lovers alike confused and conflicted. And for good reason, I think. See what you think. Give it a listen. No text. Interesting liners notes.
