If you think the Bard is a bore, you're going be surprised when you see this phenomenal vintage stage presentation of THE TAMING OF THE SHREW. The American Conservatory Theatre of San Francisco interpretation is broad comedy - very physical - perfectly permissible for Shakespeare's plays, which were written for the lowbrows as well as the upper crust. (Think Vaudeville instead of grand opera.) Try this DVD on your high-school-age kids who say, "Oh, no, classics!" and they'll realize why classics have lasted so long - it's because they can be so good! I'm glad American Theater Archive has made this and other vintage productions available, because they deserve our attention... and, in this case, our guffaws.
I was lucky enough to see this on PBS back in the day and now I'm lucky to have my own copy.

I loved this stage play. The actors were excellent!!! Overall, it was continuously witty, comical, and romantic. Best version of this Shakespearean by far!!! I would definitely recommend this for middle school, high school, and college level audiences. They would all enjoy it!
We have never seen a Shakespeare comedy performed in such an amazingly funny way! This performance highlights the physical comedy in the play and will have you laughing throughout. The costumes are outlandish, the style is unique and the acting superb. You'll never hear the word "Padua" again without the urge to yell!
I first watched this in High School. We did an one act play based on it. I never thought I would be able to find it, and believe me I tried. I was so happy to find it on Ebay. If you want to introduce your teenagers to Shakespeare this is the play to do it with.
