You will have a hard time recognizing Bette Davis in this movie as she is blonde. In her biography, she says that the studio forced her to bleach her hair when she came to Hollywood. They were trying to make her into a Jean Harlow. However, she was very proud of this movie and thinks that the reason she won the Academy Award the next year for "Dangerous" was really a belated award for this movie. The plot of the movie begins in Paris with Leslie Howard, a not-so-bright medical student, who also has a club foot. He is mesmerized with Bette, a poor barmaid, and takes her under his wing after she has been jilted by another man. Eventually she moves in with him but breaks his heart when she becomes engaged to another man with money. Leslie moves on and finds a love of his own, but Bette comes back after this second man jilts her. This process goes on and on until Bette is ill with syphilis. Once again, Leslie takes her back. His relationship with her even causes him to flunk out of medical school. She eventually turns on him again and completely tears up his apartment. Of Human Bondage is a good name for this movie. I don't think that this was Bette's best offering, but it is said that this movie made her a star.Read full review
Bette Davis was a true revelation in this movie. She inhabited her role as though it were a first skin. Great camera work in a few scenes at the end of her character's life were stunning works of cinematography. Although the print had not been restored it gave it that "Old Hollywood" feel of vintage Golden Era movie making . Well worth watching.

No DOUBT, THIS IS BETTE DAVIS'SE BEST PERFORMANCE OF HER CAREER, WHICH PUT HER ON THE MAP IN HOLLYWOOD. THE QUALITY OF THE PRINT IS NOT THAT GOOD, BUT THEN AGAIN IT'S A MIRACLE THAT THE FILM ACTUALLY EXISTS.

Very poor audio is the main reason. Most likely because the movie itself is very very old. I would not recommend buying it. You can't fully understand the characters in the movie.
