It's true that it can't be activated on Verizon or Sprint. That's because it doesn't have GPS and those carriers SELL your GPS data and they'd rather put you in a phone that makes more money for them. There's nothing illegal about activating a non-GPS phone in 2015. US law required GPS on all phones made after 2005 but there is NO BAN on activation. The carriers CHOOSE to not activate. The solution? Go with a PREPAID carrier that uses Verizon's network. Make sure you buy a Verizon-branded phone. I use Page Plus and this phone absolutely works in November 2015 and it works on Verizon's network albeit the billing is through Page Plus. I get coverage all over, far better than Sprint, AT&T, or T-Mobile. The call quality is great, and it can also do text messages. There's plenty of value in these phones and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. They're tough as nails. At this age, you'll likely need a new battery. eBay makes that easy. Just buy a new-old-stock battery. I recommend the BLS-4 which is 1500 mAH. It lasts a WEEK. Beat that any phone today. They're widely available and, as long as they're sealed in the box and not used, they're as good as new. Get yourself a nice example of the 5185i and get a Page Plus activation. You're set. If you want an easier setup, activate a 5190 through T-Mobile or AT&T. That phone requires no special workaround because it has a SIM Card, although it's 1900 MHz only so your coverage will be vastly limited compared to Verizon and their CDMA network. The 5185i works on 1900 and 850 MHz, which is the entire Verizon network today. This phone also has analog capability but it won't do you any good today as all Analog networks were shut down years ago. In its time, this was the best of the 5100 series if you ask me and it's got plenty of value left. Again, tough as nails, easy on the wallet, and high quality. High quality genuine Nokia accessories are available and will keep the phone going for many years to come. I recommend this phone highly.Read full review

Even in 2014. This phone is great for use as a basic phone if all you want is just a phone. It's rather easy to use and is quite tough. If you want to break this phone, you would have to want to break it. And even if it does. It's fairly easy to repair as this phone's parts come out like car parts. Not many phones come apart like that now a days. This phone still has lots of life left. However, don't expect this phone to work with just any carrier. As a word of advice for future buyers of this phone: look for Verizon branded ones. Then buy a Page Plus activation. And it'll be good to go. Overall, Excellent phone.
When I first got this phone I wanted an upgrade from the OLD OLD OLD phone I owned before. It was a green phone with a really big phone with a small screen. I got this because I wanted a bigger screen, and at the time this was the option. I had Alltel at that time, and then it turned out that my phone would turn off once and awhile. I'd miss calls and it was irritating. Well around that time I took up a new job and the network was on Verizon. Being I liked this phone before as a personal option before all of the shut offs, I decided I would get this AGAIN AGAIN, and it was OK as the last one, but I felt (and it did) the battery always went away, and then to the point it wouldn't charge. Well do you guys remember the trusty old Nokia that I had alltel with?? I used parts (battery which was of a bigger capacity) and used the Verizon back on again. It was amazingly durable too. I even got it wet once and it worked fine afterwards. It is a good phone, but I wouldn't go back to it now as I need more options. You could probably get it for an older person that doesn't need tech much, but I do.Read full review
I found a cellular company that you can active the phone with. Called Page Plus Cellular who uses Verizon service. Which is great cause I missed the old school phone. But Found out you have to manually program the phone because if you do over the air programming. it messes up the phone and you can't use it anymore except to play games. So if your looking to use this phone for service you can with page plus cellular but do not do over the air programming program it manullay which is easy just find instrctions on the net or I know how to do it.
A great piece of early cell phone nostalgia... You can play the snake game and listen to all those classic nokia ringtones. But because of e911 requirements from the FCC it is illegal (and has been since late 2001) for any us cell phone provider to let this phone be activated on their network. so if you live in the US you should know that you will never be able to make a phone call with this phone
