I originally saw this movie as a child in a US Air Force base movie theater when it was first released around 1959 and still recall the reaction of the audience, comprised mostly of new airmen who were getting their basic training, was enjoyment and appreciation for the antics of No Time For Sergeants, and that humor in uniform was not the exclusive domain of the British in the Terry Thomas "Carry On" movies. I am happy to see that this movie is available now on DVD and find that it still holds its own. Contrary to the "experts" on Wikipedia who claim that Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. came as a spin-off of the Anday Griffith Show, I stll believe Gomer Pyle is actually the television incarnation of No Time. I suggest that you watch it and judge for yourself. While lacking the heavy anti-war social commentary of the movie M.A.S.H., the zany comedy of Mr. Roberts or silliness of The Wackiest Ship In The Army, No Time For Sergeants demonstrates in many ways how and under what circumstances acronyms such as S.N.A.F.U. come into being. For we see in No Time twhen we are able to laugh at the humorous side of uniform life, we are able to cope with the seriousness and stresses of war, be it hot or cold. If you have lived life in the military or were around in the 50s or 60s, I think you would find Andy Grffith and Nick Adams make a strong comedic showing. My only regret was that the pair never reprised their roles in a sequel. But then again, there was Gome Pyle. I give this video a Hup,Two.Three,Four Stars out of five.Read full review
I saw this movie as a kid and loved it. There are many great moments and even now they bring L O L responses. Andy Griffith is best in this kind of role and his supporting cast lends all the help he needs to make the movie even funnier.I am currently trying to replace a number of my VHS movies with DVD and was glad to be able to get this as part of my collection. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants a good laugh, and likes Andy Griffith.
Just saw this again - this time it was on NetFlix. Checked eBay and found the DVDs for sale. This is a very funny movie, representing a time capsule of American culture from the "Country/Small town" to the military at the time. Andy Griffith shines with his country-boy "simpleness" that often reveals common sense, decency and morality. He innocently thwarts many schemes and capers of the "bad guys". Don't expect today's "humor", with its' factory-standard nudity, profanity, violence and the like. This film gets its mileage out of interesting characters and funny writing. YES, it is an "old" movie, but like I said - its a time capsule. Watch this and again be reminded just how much we've changed. I think of some lyrics from the song by the Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star: "We can't rewind - we've gone too far".Read full review
Andy Driffith was a perfect match for the part and supporting actors were pefect for the other roles. I allmost peed on myself laughing at the typical things the Army does.
