This was the best bundle deal I found for the Nikon D5500. I specifically wanted the 300mm lens for shooting sports shots at football games, and I was not disappointed. The camera itself has a ton of features and takes exceptionally good pictures. This bundle is all most beginner photographers will need to get started. I opted to add a high-speed 128MB flash card, a Yongnuo YN-568EX flash and a Kodak MIC-204 external microphone to suit my needs. The microphone is needed for recording video because the sound of the autofocus servos is detectable in the video if you just use the built-in microphone. That was a simple $20 fix. I absolutely LOVE the camera. The built-in Wi-Fi makes it easy to view and download pictures from my smart phone, and I can even focus and shoot pictures with the same app. The touchscreen is icing on the cake, making it very easy to select shooting modes and variables, as well as quickly viewing and zooming in on your shots. The setup options menu is very robust. I can't see me ever "outgrowing" this camera.Read full review

The one I got appeared to be an import and acted strange out of the box so I had to return it but conceptually this is a step in the right direction as it's lighter than the D5300 and has a touch screen even if reported to be slow. I've also heard that not being able to make adjustments to the aperture like the Canon during video recording is a downer. I ended up settling for the D5300 since it has the bypass anti-aliasing filter that makes the quality, as reported, as good as the 7100. I think the small size is much better than the 7100 even if there's no weather proofing. I'm not sure if weather proofing is a needed feature for me. I tried a 7100 that was too tight and I think nearly damaged my lenses so if that's weather proofing I don't like that. Buying a body is always a compromise. But getting a good deal helps with that. I would be careful who you buy it from since getting a foreign model is not good or a stolen one that Nikon will take from you if you service. I got some duds from Nikon's refurbished section so all sellers aren't perfect but going through eBay protects you from this situation unless you don't notice something right away. This model is nice for sure just make sure you get a good one.Read full review

Switched from an old-in-tooth D300 that had too many control and menu interactions for me to consistently get the photos I want. In A or M mode I can easily make this camera do just what I want without it doing something unexpected. REALLY love the touch screen for settings and the 3 round Shutter, Aperture and ISO Icons. It doesn't have all the bells/whistles of D7200 and D500, but just right for me. I can even set AEL/AFL button to do "back button" Focus and have the shutter button NOT (re) focus the shot. Wonderful! Battery life is quite satisfactory, but I keep a couple of charged spares with me just in case. When I don't want to worry about big light changes, Auto ISO up to 3200 is really good for 11X14 and smaller pics IMHO (6400 pretty OK too). DX 1.5X crop sensor at 25.4 megapixels is a lot of pixels in a relatively small sensor. I get really sharp crisp photos - I think more pixels could actually make this worse. This camera is light! And quite small for a DSLR. I don't use the WIFI so no comment there. Read full review

As most Nikon's are this is a good camera. I bought it to upgrade from my D5000 for two reasons: one, to be able to send images via wireless signal and two, to be able to get higher resolution images. It is light weight, the instructions are a little complicated as I think it is more than just for the average point and shoot customer though that option exists. Many of the settings are easy to change, if not easy to understand. The quality and resolution of photos with this camera is amazing. I bought just the body because I have the same lenses I have used for two previous Nikon cameras. I am told this is an "entry level" professional camera. I am not sure if it is or not, but it is user friendly and if you are willing to learn, you can make it's usefulness that much greater.

This written from the perspective of a long time D5100 owner. I finally decided to upgrade from my old camera. I saw this at a pretty decent price, and read a few reviews about how good this camera was. After receiving the camera, I noticed right away How much smaller it was, compared to my D5100. That's not bad, just different. It actually feels better in my hand. Right away, I could tell the difference in the auto focus system. I sometimes use my DSLR for video, and the auto focus is far more responsive. Speaking of video, I can vouch this is now a viable option. I was very impressed with the quality with my 50mm 1.8 and shooting in 24p. I mainly use a Canon XA35, and would put the footage I captured in the same category as it. It's not a full time video shooter, but for the back, it's pretty good. Photos are crisp and clear. I love the touchscreen. It makes it so much easier to make adjustments to my exposure on the fly. All in all, this is a well thought out camera. For an upper novice shooter like myself, this is the perfect balance of quality, helps and price. Highly recommended.Read full review
