I've introduced several people I know who enjoy Fellini's artistry and appreciate the difference between "cinema" and conventional movies.....and the response to Giulietta Masina's colorful and vibrant portrayal of the naïve but easily lovable Cabiria has always been enthusiastic and welcoming. Cabiria obviously has her rough edges and street-wise bravado....but again, this is certainly part of her undeniable charm. She is the quintessential woman (and heroine) who may sometimes be "down".....but is never, EVER "out". Her trusting nature has lead her to men who have less than pure intentions towards her...and this is how NIGHTS OF CABIRIA begins....and although her immediate reactions to the situation are rather harsh, you just can not help but to take a positive shine to her..... and through the meandering progression of events which follow, it becomes easy to develop a sympathetic liking of this brash and impetuous streetwalker. Fellini's magic however begins to take physical shape when she meets an accountant named Oscar through an unlikely event, and he opens his heart and affections towards Cabiria, who by now has become very suspicious of men's motives. What transpires afterwards is pure Fellini....and THIS is a filmic event NOT to be missed! I highly recommend NIGHTS OF CABIRIA to anyone who has a true appreciation of cinema.Read full review

Cabiria (Giulietta Masina) lives in a poor sector of Rome, Italy, where she's a prostitute whose dreams of a better life are confounded by evil doing men. This is Federico Fellini's (1957) classic haunting drama about the a child-like street-walker who somehow manages to retain her senses of curiosity, hope for becoming respectable & remains unhardened by the harshness of the city where she lives. Cabiria owns a small house & bank account. The men in her life mercilessly use & abuse her. For example, one of her boyfriends helps himself to 40,000 lire from Cabiria's purse, then throws her into the river, left to nearly drown. While Cabiria's street-walking, a film star on the Via Veneto takes her to his home for his own pleasure. Still faithful, Cabiria seeks out the Madonna's help to realize her dreams. Acting out heart-felt desires while hypnotized on a vaudeville stage, an accountant watches. Believing that he may be her way out of the slums, Cabiria goes along with his courting. Has the Madonna answered her prayer? Or is theirs another ill-fated relation. Could this businessman appreciate Cabiria as she is? Has she fallen in love or for another cheap trick? Answers to such questions are considered by Fellini's depth of perception of human frailty. This film's charm is it's element of comedy interwoven with the drama by Fellini. Nights of Cabiria is another gem by Federico Fellini. The title character is played by Giulietta Masina who is married to director Fellini. As an actress she has the most expressive face reminiscent of Chaplin. I highly recommend this movie. It will move you.

This is a great film. In the USA only the OOP Criterion is the way to see this (unless TCM has a showing). There is a Blu-ray from Europe and another from Japan; hardly something the average film fan will find with ease. Getting a Criterion edition in fine shape for a fair price is a true win. I highly recommend this film. It's an drama about a young prostitute in Rome who is just getting. Yes, a French film set in Italy. Why Not?

The best Fellini film in my opinion. Giulietta Masina is so wonderful as Cabiria in this film. It’s worth the extra money to spring for this out of print Criterion version of the film as well. It’s absolutely the copy that you want. Plenty of great extras and a quality transfer. Hopefully we’ll see a rerelease on Blu Ray at some point. A beautiful film in so many ways. ❤️
