This is not a movie about to win any artistic acclaim for plot or for character development or for any other standards of drama. It IS, however, a wonderful opportunity to see Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday perform together. For those of us who love Louis and who love Lady Day, this film is a treasure. For anybody else, it won't be terribly exciting. Satchmo plays himself, and Billie plays Endie, a maid (as unlikely as that seems) to a lady named Mrs. Smith and her daughter. Once you hear Billie sing the title song, "Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans", you won't be able to get it out of your head. Her interpretation is haunting, as it is with every song she ever recorded. It has been argued that Billie Holiday isn't given a single good line in the whole movie, but I disagree. Just judge for yourself: Mrs. Smith: "Endie, I thought I told you not to let me catch you again at that piano". Endie (Billie Holiday): "I'm sorry, ma'am. If I'd 'a heard you comin', I wouldn'a let you catch me."Read full review
