The Nero Wolfe television series is entertaining, amusing and very well done. Unlike previous tv attempts to portray Rex Stout's eccentric characters, this series is very well cast. Both Archie Goodwin and Nero Wolfe are believable and true to character---even for the most exacting of fans. I've read most of the detective novels several times, more for enjoyment of the characters and atmosphere of 40's-50's Manhattan than for the plot. The only caveat I would offer potential viewers is that the series is high camp. Costumes, settings and cars are not necessarily period perfect and seem to be selected more for their visual drama than for period accuracy. This didn't bother me, but some perfectionists might snipe at that point. Frankly, it only increased my enjoyment of the series because they were fun to look at in addition to being interesting mystery programs. Nero Wolfe's brownstone is rich in interior detail and the series has so many levels of interest that I know I will watch the episodes over and over. These programs are not just about "who done it." The only other point I think the Nero Wolfe afficianado might pick at is that the many characters in the various episodes are played by many of the same actors as in a repetory theatre company. (for example, the actress who plays Archie's girlfriend Lily in one episode may be the victim's wife in another episode---it takes some getting used to). All in all, these shows are highly recommended and make a fabulous transition from the printed page to your tv screen.Read full review
I really enjoyed this series when it was on several years ago and jumped at the chance to buy both complete years. It was even better than I remembered -- and I got to finally see a few episodes that I missed when it originally ran on A&E. Maury Chaykin is perfect as Wolfe -- exactly as you would imagine him if you read any of the Rex Stout classics. Timothy Hutton is equally good as Archie Goodwin. An interesting (and unique) feature of this series is that many of the supporting cast were, in essence, a repertory company, playing different characters in different episodes. The series perfectly recreates the early 1950's in which it is set. All in all, I highly recommend this series to anyone who appreciates really good television. I can't help but wonder why they ended it after only two years. Riveting, amusing, suspenseful, wonderfully acted and presented -- it just doesn't get any better than this.Read full review
I bought this because I soooo much enjoyed the first season. The writing style is campy and reminiscene of the old Phillip Marlow stories. This is beautifully photographed and true to the books. The one thing I really enjoy is how the same people play different roles each week and trying to spot them is a challenge for the viewer. In some cases one person plays several roles in one episode but the roles are so different the viewer has to be on their toes to spot the player. The only thing I dislike is that there are not even more to buy.
the dvd set arrived early and the dvd'z were like new...no scratiches on any of the the discs...we are more tha pleased with this seller and this product...well beyond our expectations.....and the price was fabulous...

I purchased both the First and Second Season of this remarkable series. It was a delight to watch. I really don't understand why it wasn't kept on TV for more seasons. Timothy Hutton is great as are all the other actors; it's unique in that the same actors play various parts in all the episodes.....real talent! Not like the garbage on TV today. I haven't had TV reception for 20 years now but have watched it occassionally when hospitalized and it stinks...why pay to watch commercials? Buy DVDs and subscribe to Netflix for commercial free intertainment at your whim and time! I do purchase DVD sets such as NCIS, Criminal Minds,Tom Selleck's Jesse Stone movies and Foyle's War.....it's nice to watch when I feel like and commercial free!
