Bawdy for its time (1934) and brimming with vigour, this historical drama about the relationship between King Charles 2 and his saucy-wench mistress Nell Gwyn had the American censors foaming at the mouth. They were so outraged that they demanded more than 30 cuts - and a happy ending! Cedric Hardwicke makes a believable, larger-than-life King and the supporting cast includes Miles Malleson (who also wrote the script, largely based on the diary of Samuel Pepys). But it is Anna Neagle's film, whether she is acting or dancing. She is a joy - save for a tendency to be a bit like a pantomime principal boy.
I have a particular interest in the Restoration period and the character of Nell Gwyn. I believe that this is the most realistic and enjoyable account of the relationship between Nell Gwyn and Charles the Second. Anna Neagle gave a wonderful portrayal of Nell and it was a joy to see her dancing skills. Music and atmosphere was excellent. All the principals gave a good account of their character and Cedric Hardwick captured the personality of King Charles very well. A truly wonderful little film that I shall treasure and enjoy. There was nothing to dislike. Wonderful costumes and very good acting.
I really enjoyed this film! The picture quality is a little tiny bit grainy but that is purely because it is an old film. The actors gave great performances and if you like Charles II and this time period it is a must-see!
