Tom Lehrer, long one of my father's favorites, has been one of my favorites since I was a child. His witty humor, fantastic piano playing and clever lyrics, though typically politically incorrect, still run through my head from time to time! This song book featuring piano music, lyrics and guitar chords for his songs is always a big hit at family gatherings! My personal favorite of all the songs in this book is the, "Irish Ballad." The lyrics are, well, disturbing, to say the least, and I won't tell you the punch line. I will give you the first two verses of this tale of a young Irish lass who, one by one, did in her entire family. "About a maid I'll sing a song, Sing rickety-tickety-tin, About a maid I'll sing a song, Who didn't have her fam'ly long. Not only did she do them wrong, She did ev'ryone of them in, them in, She did ev'ryone of them in. One morning in a fit of pique, Sing rickety-tickety-tin, One morning in a fit of pique, She drowned her father in the creek. The water tasted bad for a week, And we had to make do with gin, with gin, We had to make do with gin." For something REALLY different, get this song book for your next gathering, and get the CD's so you can get a good feel for the style of the songs!Read full review
Tom Lehrer's music is excellence in lyrical and melodic form. I have longed to play and sing as he did, and with this book of sheet music this can be made reality. Sometimes obscene, offensive and most often downright silly, his music also curiously borders on intellectual and inspirational. The delightfully disturbing nature of the music is only enhanced by Ronald Searle's beautifully morbid illustrations including dead babies, atomic disasters, and countless skulls. The combination is perfect; humorous yet utilitary. Highly recommended.
Years ago I had this Tom Lehrer collection and somehow lost it. The songs are so much fun and remind me of the "old days." Good arrangements.
